In a heartfelt reflection, Rashid bin Mohammed bin Hashim bin Rashid, a member of Al Wasl Club, recounted cherished memories with the late Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He emphasised that their relationship extended beyond mere administrative or sporting duties, evolving into a profound human connection that left indelible marks on the hearts of Wasl’s community.
Return to the Club
Bin Hashim recalled a significant moment captured in 1996, when Sheikh Ahmed made his return to the club after a decade-long absence. That season was particularly memorable, as it culminated in Al Wasl being crowned champions of the league, alongside a celebration honouring its players. “On that day, we didn’t just feel that Sheikh Ahmed had returned to the club; it felt as though Al Wasl had been reestablished,” he stated.
The return of Sheikh Ahmed revitalised the club’s spirit, rallying its members around a figure known for his warmth and appreciation for everyone who had dedicated their efforts to Al Wasl. Bin Hashim fondly remembered an encounter with Sheikh Buti bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, the club’s chairman at the time, who remarked that he and the late Saud bin Abdulaziz were “two fruitful palm trees” deeply rooted in Al Wasl. “Those words have always been a source of pride for me, recognising many years dedicated to the club. We were proud to be led by a Sheikh who was close to the people,” he added.
Memories of Humour
Bin Hashim’s memories with the late Sheikh Ahmed extend beyond the pitch and trophies, reflecting moments of humanity that showcased the Sheikh’s joyful spirit and humility. He recounted returning to the UAE following an extended medical treatment of six to eight months and growing a beard during his time away. Upon seeing him after such a lengthy absence, Sheikh Ahmed joked to one of his aides, “Who is this man with the beard?” before recognising him and walking over to greet him personally.
Bin Hashim viewed this simple yet telling incident as a testament to the Sheikh’s humility. “I was advancing to welcome him, but when he spotted me, he took more steps towards me before I could reach him. That was the kind of humility embodied in this man,” he said. Their conversation then turned to playful banter about the colour of Bin Hashim’s beard, a memory that remains vividly imprinted in his mind. He noted that some memories are reserved for the personal realm, representing a bond that existed beyond the public eye, highlighting the simplicity and approachability of the late Sheikh.
A Bridge of Loyalty
Bin Hashim expressed his pride in participating in the “Ahmed bin Rashid Human Bridge” initiative, asserting that, while significant, this endeavour only scratches the surface of the lifetime of contributions the late Sheikh made. “I take pride in speaking about this man, and it is an honour to be part of his bridge. This bridge represents just a fraction of what he offered to the people and the community, both poor and rich,” he remarked.
Concluding his reflections, Bin Hashim offered prayers for the late Sheikh, expressing his hope that all his contributions to the nation and its people would be placed in his scales of good deeds. “May God have mercy on him, forgive him, and grant that all he did for the people be accounted to him,” he concluded.
