In a significant development for sustainable transportation, Ras Al Khaimah has inaugurated its first electric bus as part of the public transport network. This launch coincides with the unveiling of an upgraded version of the Purple Route, connecting Nakheel to Manar Mall. This initiative emphasizes the emirate’s commitment to eco-friendly travel and aims to enhance public transit accessibility with an additional 14 kilometers added to its route.
Expansion of the Purple Route
The upgraded Purple Route features a notable 14-kilometer extension that refreshes the line’s coverage. This adjustment includes revised travel routes, increased bus stops, and updated schedules designed to improve service frequency. Such enhancements are tailored to meet the needs of public transport users while facilitating smoother travel between critical areas in Ras Al Khaimah.
Route Details and Benefits
Spanning an additional 14 kilometers in one direction, the Purple Route now comprises nine main stops. These include essential services such as the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Border Security, Obaidullah Hospital, the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, Al Seih area, Ras Al Khaimah Hospital, the Public Health Center – Preventive Medicine, the People of Determination Center, and concluding at Manar Mall before returning to Nakheel. Travelers will benefit from 12 updated daily trips along this route.
Encouraging Community Engagement
To promote usage, Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority is making the Purple Route free for community members during its initial month of operation. This trial period aims to encourage residents to experience the newly enhanced service and further integrate it into their daily commuting routines.

The introduction of the first electric bus within the public transit framework represents a practical step towards Ras Al Khaimah’s green transition. According to Ismail Hassan Al-Balooshi, Director General of the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority, this initiative reflects the authority’s dedication to implementing modern, effective, and sustainable transportation solutions. The expansion of the Purple Route is an integral component of Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority’s efforts to enlarge the public transit network, targeting an increase in geographical coverage from 55% to 65% by 2026. The aim is to extend the total length of transit routes within the emirate to 215 kilometers, setting a robust foundation for future urban growth while enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
