Port of Khorfakkan Welcomes MSC Marella’s 24,000 Container Capacity

On September 3, 2026, port of Khorfakkan made headlines by welcoming the MSC Mariella, a colossal container ship with a capacity of 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This remarkable arrival showcases the advanced capabilities of Khorfakkan port and underscores its strategic position in the global maritime trade landscape.

The MSC Mariella belongs to the Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) category, measuring approximately 400 metres in length and over 61 metres in width. Its size and capacity place it among a select group of the largest container ships currently in operation, marking a significant milestone in Khorfakkan’s readiness to handle the latest generations of megaships and their operational and logistical requirements.

Developmental Vision

The docking of this giant vessel reflects the growing importance of Khorfakkan port within the international maritime transport framework. This has been achieved through the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. His strategic focus on Khorfakkan and the eastern region has resulted in significant investments in infrastructure, economic, and logistical facilities, enhancing its connectivity to trade networks and establishing Khorfakkan as a principal maritime gateway for the UAE and the wider region.

Khorfakkan port enjoys a strategic location on the eastern coast of the UAE, directly facing the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. Its proximity to major international shipping routes grants it a competitive edge in facilitating trade flows between Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Gulf, East Africa, and global markets.

Operational Capabilities

Gulf Navigation, an Emirati company specializing in port operations, manages the container terminal at Khorfakkan. This operational framework combines specialized expertise with advanced infrastructure and modern equipment, enabling the terminal to efficiently receive and handle oversized vessels.

The container terminal features six berths with a total length of approximately 1,880 metres and a draft of up to 16 metres, equipped with 18 advanced gantry cranes for container handling. In line with development plans, attempts are underway to boost the terminal’s capacity to accommodate about 5 million TEUs annually, thereby enhancing its operational capabilities to keep pace with the ongoing growth in vessel sizes and maritime trade volumes.

Competitive Advantage

Khorfakkan’s competitive edge is further highlighted by its rapid connectivity between maritime operations and local markets. The port’s location, operational efficiency, and interconnected road transport network enable swift delivery of shipments to their destinations within the UAE, offering logistical versatility for shipping lines and cargo owners.

The capabilities of Khorfakkan port are integrated with a network of logistics facilities, including the Al Sujah logistics hub and Al Dhaid logistics hub, developed by the Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority. This integration bolsters the linkage between maritime ports and storage and distribution centres, fostering the establishment of a cohesive logistics framework that supports trade movements and supply chains to and from Sharjah and the UAE as well as regional markets.

Maritime Infrastructure

The Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority affirmed that the reception of large container ships demonstrates the growing trust that the port system enjoys amongst major global shipping companies. This reception signals the readiness of Sharjah’s maritime infrastructure to meet the rapid advancements in the shipping industry and accommodate the new generations of massive container ships. The authority emphasized that this position reinforces Sharjah’s role in supporting international trade and enhancing its competitiveness.

The arrival of the MSC Mariella coincides with ongoing efforts to develop Khorfakkan port further, aiming to increase its capacity from 3.5 million to 5 million TEUs annually as part of a phased plan that targets reaching 7 million and eventually 10 million TEUs per year. These initiatives are designed to match the continuous growth in maritime trade and prepare the port for receiving larger vessels, thereby solidifying its position as a key hub for container services and transshipment in the region.

A Strategic Maritime and Logistical Gateway

Khorfakkan port continues to advance its maritime, operational, and logistical capabilities through collaboration with partners and operators. These efforts serve to enhance the competitiveness of the Emirate of Sharjah and the UAE as a vital centre for trade, maritime transport, and logistics services, solidifying Khorfakkan’s status as a strategic gateway connecting regional markets with global trade networks.
