Medcare has marked a significant milestone in its medical journey by launching its kidney transplant programme, following the successful completion of its inaugural operation involving a living donor for an international patient. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive organ transplant service, adhering to the highest international medical standards, and is designed to cater to patients not only from the UAE but also from the wider Middle East and around the globe.
A Landmark Medical Achievement
The first kidney transplant, conducted from a living donor to an overseas patient, highlights the UAE’s growing reputation as a hub for advanced healthcare and specialised medical services. The patient travelled to the UAE specifically for the procedure, underlining the trust placed in the nation’s medical facilities.
Vision for Advanced Healthcare
In a statement regarding this achievement, Alisha Mobin, Managing Director and CEO of the Aster DM Healthcare Group, expressed: “The launch of Medcare’s organ transplant centre is a pivotal step in our vision to provide advanced and specialised healthcare services to a broader patient demographic, both in the UAE and regionally.”
Comprehensive Care Approach
Dr Shanyla Laigo, CEO of Medcare Hospitals and Medical Centres, added, “The success of Medcare in performing its first kidney transplant and launching the organ transplant centre represents a critical juncture in our development of clinical services. This accomplishment reflects our ability to handle complex medical and surgical cases within an integrated healthcare framework.”
Multidisciplinary Team
The Medcare organ transplant programme boasts a multidisciplinary team of top experts in various fields, including organ transplant surgery, nephrology, hepatology, urology, anaesthesia, intensive care, radiology, pathology, infectious diseases, immunology, rehabilitation, and long-term patient management.
Complex Journey
According to Dr Gaurab Sinha, Director of the Liver, Pancreas, Biliary Surgery and Organ Transplant Services at Medcare Sharjah, “Kidney transplantation is a complex treatment journey that begins well before the surgery and continues throughout the recipient’s life.”
Expert Surgical Leadership
The operation was conducted by a highly experienced multidisciplinary medical team, with over two decades of international experience, having worked in India, the UK, and the UAE. This team has a proven record of performing more than 1,000 abdominal organ transplants, including those of the liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
The surgical procedure was led by organ transplant surgeons Dr Gaurab Sinha and Dr Jones Shaji Mathew, consultant in gastrointestinal and organ transplant surgery, alongside the kidney transplant team led by Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed and the anaesthesia team under the leadership of Dr George Jacob Malail.
