Jumeirah Beach Elevates Accessibility to New Industry Benchmark

In a significant development for inclusivity, Jumeirah Beach has become the first beach in Dubai to receive the Gold Accreditation for Accessibility. Awarded by the Global Disability Union, this prestigious recognition underscores the commitment of Dubai Municipality to creating an environment that is safe, inclusive, and accessible for individuals with disabilities. This milestone not only highlights advancements in infrastructure but also signifies a broader effort to enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the facilities with dignity and confidence.

On June 29, 2026, Dubai Municipality announced that Jumeirah Beach had been awarded the Gold Accreditation for Accessibility, becoming the first beach in Dubai to receive this recognition. This achievement acknowledges the municipality’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and fully accessible environment for people with disabilities, in line with international accessibility standards and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in Dubai Municipality’s efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusivity in public beaches and recreational destinations. It ensures that individuals with disabilities can enjoy public facilities with independence, comfort, and confidence. The beach received the Gold Accreditation for Accessibility after implementing a comprehensive program to improve accessibility within a record time of just six months, transforming it into one of the most inclusive beach destinations in the region.

The program included infrastructure development, the provision of specialized solutions, staff training, and enhanced operational readiness. Among the requirements for accreditation, designated parking for individuals with disabilities, equipped pathways and ramps, accessible restrooms and shower facilities, as well as charging stations for wheelchairs and golf cart transport services were provided.

To create a more inclusive beach environment, inclusive play facilities, free beach chairs and umbrellas, as well as a designated swimming platform and floating wheelchairs were established to facilitate safe and comfortable access to the sea. One of the key factors contributing to the accreditation was the creation of a dedicated sensory room, making the beach the first beach destination in the Middle East to offer such facilities.

Accessibility extends beyond infrastructure and facilities. Specialized training was provided for 150 staff members from field and operational teams as part of the accreditation program, enhancing the beach’s ability to deliver superior services. Engineer Ibrahim Mohammed Jumaa, Director of the Public Beaches and Waterways Department at Dubai Municipality, stated that “this international recognition reflects Dubai Municipality’s commitment to ensuring that public beaches are accessible, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for everyone.”

Such efforts reflect the belief that quality of life begins with equal opportunities for access to public facilities and experiences. Through ongoing investment in infrastructure, services, and training, Dubai Municipality enhances its capabilities to empower individuals with disabilities to enjoy the city’s beaches safely, independently, and with dignity.
