The United Arab Emirates recently concluded its participation in the 2026 China International Industry Expo, held in Shanghai from October 12 to 16. This event forms a part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to enhance its strategic relationships with global markets in industry and technology, aiming to develop the national industrial sector while leveraging advanced technological experiences and establishing new investment and industrial partnerships.

Developing and Testing Technology

This visit underscores the UAE’s commitment to harnessing Chinese expertise in advancing its technology capabilities, with a focus on transitioning from traditional manufacturing to smart manufacturing. By incorporating robotics and automation, the UAE aims to accelerate production, minimise errors, reduce waste, enhance quality, and fortify its manufacturing capabilities to compete effectively and attract investment. This transition is also essential for establishing the UAE as an industrial hub for exports, maximising technological utilisation in factories, and creating opportunities to train engineers and specialists while gaining a deeper understanding of software and control systems tailored to the needs of local industry.

The presence of Chinese partners, along with those from other nations, offers the UAE expanded choices in technology, costs, and investment models, reducing reliance on a single source. Moreover, this shift could position UAE factories as benchmarks for technological solutions, enabling the development of proprietary technologies whilst appealing to international firms to establish their industrial applications and partnerships, thereby solidifying the UAE’s role as a centre for innovation and investment.

Transferring Technical Expertise

A delegation from the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, led by Undersecretary Hassan Jassem Al Noais, participated in the expo alongside leaders from various UAE institutions, including the Edge Group, UAE Development Bank, Abu Dhabi Investment Office, Mubadala Investment Company, Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zones Authority, Emirates Global Aluminium, and Aldar. This presence highlights the collaboration between the UAE and China and the exploration of new partnership opportunities in advanced industrial and technological sectors.

Al Noais stated that the UAE’s involvement in the expo aligns with the leadership’s directives to strengthen strategic relationships in the industrial sector, foster partnerships, and leverage technological solutions to enhance competitiveness in Emirati products and contribute to the national GDP. He emphasised the ministry’s commitment to supporting industrial and technological collaborations while leveraging international expertise to refine the industrial sector, especially concerning future industries. Al Noais further acknowledged China as a pivotal partner in the realms of industry, technology, and investment.

Collaboration with Industrial Companies

The Emirati delegation attended the opening ceremony of the expo and conducted field visits to various pavilions to witness the cutting-edge solutions and technologies in smart manufacturing, automation, and robotics. Discussions with Chinese companies focused on exchanging expertise and applying advanced technologies in the industrial sector within the UAE.

Meetings were held with several Chinese enterprises specialising in industrial robotics and automation, including HIK Robotics, Aston Automation, Holisys, Innovance Technology, ABB Robotics, and Mic Mind Robotics. The purpose was to explore industrial collaboration opportunities and develop advanced manufacturing solutions, discuss pilot projects in UAE factories, and seek partnerships with Chinese companies to take advantage of the UAE’s industrial and investment environment.

Additionally, the delegation undertook site visits to notable Chinese companies such as ABB Robotics to observe industrial robotics applications, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) to investigate supply chain cooperation in the aviation sector, and SAIC Motor for opportunities in electric vehicle assembly and smart manufacturing applications. Visits also included Innovance Technology and GCL to understand clean industry control systems and materials, as well as Rox Motors, Agibot, and Sevins Robotics to study localisation of supply chains, human robotics applications, and inspection systems in the industrial and energy sectors.
