Gulf Cooperation Council Condemns “Media Campaigns” Targeting the UAE and Qatar
In a strong statement, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jasem Al-Budaiwi, condemned a series of “media campaigns” targeting the UAE and Qatar. These remarks come after both countries denied allegations regarding financial operations with Iran, underscoring the importance of addressing this issue in both regional and international contexts. The statements affirm the strength of Gulf cooperation and bolster the member states’ position in confronting rumors and misinformation.
Emphasis on Integrity and Credibility
In his remarks, Al-Budaiwi referred to what he described as “malicious media allegations and unverified information” aimed at the UAE and Qatar. While he did not provide specifics about these allegations, his statement followed the UAE’s denial of transferring any funds to Iran and Qatar’s denial of coordination with Tehran regarding energy production. Al-Budaiwi stressed that these campaigns aim to sow doubt about the positions of both countries and their active roles in supporting regional and international security and stability.
UAE and Qatar Denials
On Saturday, the UAE confirmed that it had not transferred or sent any funds to Iran, describing the claims as “allegations.” The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “The UAE categorically denies what has been reported in some international media regarding the transfer of any financial amounts from the UAE to Iran, including allegations related to the amount of $3 billion.” It also confirmed that “no frozen Iranian funds have been released, transferred, or sent through the UAE.”
Regional and International Reactions
For its part, Qatar denied in a statement from the International Media Office the accuracy of claims published by The Washington Post, which suggested coordination between Doha and Tehran. According to the statement, these allegations do not reflect the truth and are part of media campaigns aimed at undermining Qatar’s ability to address regional challenges. Thus, the Gulf Cooperation Council once again demonstrates its capacity to confront the media chaos targeting its members.
Regional Stability as a Priority
In conclusion, Al-Budaiwi affirmed that the Gulf Cooperation Council member states will remain steadfast in their commitment to enhancing stability and cooperation among member countries. He noted that no “media campaigns aimed at discrediting any member” would be tolerated. These statements are reinforced by the practical steps taken by the countries to strengthen relations between Iran and other states, particularly as Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif intends to discuss the imminent prospect of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran.
