UAE-India partnership in the green economy: Opportunities for Indian companies supporting the UAE’s net-zero 2050 goal, in line with clean energy, waste management, and electric mobility regulations.

The Indian Business and Professional Council recently hosted a webinar in Dubai discussing the substantial opportunities arising from the UAE’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This event comes as both nations aim to double their bilateral trade volume to $200 billion by 2030. The UAE’s commitment is expected to open new multi-sector growth avenues for Indian firms, with increasing involvement in renewable energy, waste management, sustainable construction, green financing, electric mobility, and climate technology.

Regulatory Framework

Addressing participants, former Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Sanjay Sudhir, highlighted the essential need for businesses to adapt to existing regulations and comply with regulatory standards. He pointed out the shift in climate agendas from voluntary commitments to compliance-driven policies, referencing Federal Decree No. 11 of 2024. Sudhir emphasised the imperative for businesses to elevate their awareness of these regulatory landscapes.

He noted that the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is accelerating, showcasing the integrated strengths of both markets—India’s technology and innovation alongside the UAE’s capital, infrastructure, and market accessibility. The current clean energy landscape in India further underlines the importance of collaboration with the UAE, as nearly 87% of India’s renewable energy capacity is privately owned, marking energy transition as a significant commercial opportunity for Indian companies.

Promising Opportunities

Sami Ullah Khan, CEO of Net Zero, reinforced that opportunities in the green economy extend beyond solar energy. He highlighted that Indian firms can engage in wind energy, microgrid solutions, rooftop solar systems, geothermal energy, carbon credits, direct air capture, energy efficiency solutions, emissions measurement, and emerging prospects in agritech and waste management.

Khan urged companies to proactively adapt rather than merely react, stressing that the UAE’s journey towards carbon neutrality is creating a demand for solutions that can be quickly implemented at a commercial scale. The webinar pointed out immediate opportunities for Indian companies in building retrofits, waste management, and electric mobility. Reducing reliance on landfills in the UAE could generate substantial demand for innovative waste management technologies and operational models from India, while India’s experience with electric bike solutions and building retrofits provides potential adaptability for the UAE’s market.
