Green Charging Stations Experience Remarkable 23.6% Growth in Q1

The latest report from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) highlights an impressive 23.6% growth in the utilization of the “Green Charger” stations during the first quarter of 2025. This surge underscores the rising adoption of electric vehicles in Dubai and reflects the emirate’s commitment to sustainable transportation. With such significant advancements, the initiative continues to play a crucial role in reducing carbon footprints and promoting eco-friendly practices across the region.

Significant Growth in Electric Vehicle Charging

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, announced that the “Green Charger” initiative has provided over 39,159 megawatt-hours of electricity for charging electric vehicles in Dubai since its launch in 2015, accumulating more than 195 million kilometers of electric vehicle usage. This translates into a noticeable increase in electric vehicle adoption, with the number of electric vehicles reaching 39,000 by the end of the first quarter of 2025. This marks a 5.41% rise compared to the same period in 2024, reinforcing the effectiveness of Dubai’s sustainable transportation initiatives.

Enhancing Sustainable Transport

Al Tayer emphasized the city’s commitment to transitioning to eco-friendly transportation systems. He stated, “We support the shift toward using green transport systems and achieving climate neutrality by reducing the carbon footprint in the transport sector.” This ambition aligns with the UAE’s climate neutrality strategy for 2050 and Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy for 2030, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to sustainable growth.

Infrastructure Development and Public Engagement

As part of the “Green Charger” initiative, the number of registered users has increased dramatically from just 14 participants in 2015 to 20,903 by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The robust infrastructure in Dubai now boasts over 1,100 electric vehicle charging points, including those developed under the “Green Charger” initiative as well as independent operators licensed by DEWA. This extensive network makes it convenient for residents and visitors to transition to electric vehicles.

Accessibility and Convenient Features

According to a comprehensive survey by global firm Toluna, 73% of residents in the UAE express a preference for electric vehicles, highlighting a growing trend in sustainable consumer choices. The “Green Charger” stations are readily available around the clock in key locations throughout Dubai. Users can easily locate charging stations via DEWA’s website, its smart app, and 14 other digital platforms. The charging stations include a variety of options, such as ultra-fast chargers and public charging points, catering to diverse customer needs.

DEWA has made it simple for clients to create a “Green Charger” account through its website, smart app, or interactive voice response system, allowing quick access to its charging stations within an hour of vehicle registration. Importantly, both registered and non-registered users can avail themselves of the service via the “Visitor’s Feature,” making electric vehicle charging even more accessible.

The momentum seen this quarter reaffirms Dubai’s position as a leader in sustainable transportation, spurred by the successful adoption of the “Green Charger” initiative. As electric vehicle usage continues to grow, the city remains dedicated to fostering an environmentally conscious community.
