Family Businesses Drive 60 Percent of UAE GDP Growth

In the United Arab Emirates, family-owned businesses play a pivotal role in the economy, contributing approximately 60% to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). This significant involvement highlights the impact of these enterprises on economic growth and underscores their importance in job creation and the overall business landscape. With more than 80% of job opportunities stemming from family businesses and nearly 90% of private companies in the UAE falling under this category, their contribution is integral to the vision for “We Are the Emirates 2031,” which aims to triple the GDP to three trillion dirhams.

The Role of Family Businesses in the Economy

According to the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, family businesses are vital to the UAE’s economic framework. Recent reports emphasize that these companies not only provide substantial employment opportunities but are also critical in fostering economic resilience and growth. The collective strength of these enterprises positions them as a cornerstone of the Emirati economy, essential for achieving long-term national objectives.

Legislative Support and Innovations

During a recent open dialogue session organized by the ministry, representatives from six major family-owned businesses convened to discuss and enhance direct communication with government entities. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that these businesses can fully leverage the evolving legislative and regulatory environment. Assistant Undersecretary for Entrepreneurship and Economic Affairs, Abdulaziz Al Nuaimi, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to developing a comprehensive and competitive legal framework tailored for the family business sector.

Groundbreaking Regulations and Next Steps

A significant milestone in this effort is the issuance of the Federal Law Decree No. (37) of 2022 concerning family businesses. This legislation is unique on a global scale and has led to the establishment of four ministerial decisions that created a “Unified Registry for Family Businesses.” This registry facilitates the legal framework for family companies, outlining processes for ownership transfer and governance while ensuring smooth generational transitions.

Ensuring Sustainability and Future Growth

With the unified registry now fully operational, it hosts 18 family businesses and provides essential services such as registration, certificate issuance, and charter deposit. Al Nuaimi also discussed the legal frameworks available under the new law that promote sustainability and ensure effective governance of family businesses. The dialogue focused on fostering solutions for challenges related to generational ownership and management transition, which are crucial for the continued success of these enterprises.

The engagement between family businesses and government representatives signifies a mutual commitment to enhancing the ecosystem that supports one of the UAE’s most vital economic sectors. As the country moves toward its ambitious goals, the role of family businesses will undoubtedly become even more pronounced. With robust legislation and a supportive environment, these businesses are well-positioned to thrive in the future.
