The launch of the national project to empower professional media personnel with disabilities, in collaboration with the National Media Authority and Trends Research and Consultations, marks a significant step towards redefining inclusivity in the media landscape. This initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to transitioning from a social perspective of integration to a professional and productive framework, ensuring that individuals with special needs play a pivotal role in creating impactful media content.
The Zayed Authority for People of Determination, in cooperation with the National Media Authority and Trends Research and Consultations, has launched the national project to prepare and empower professional media personnel with disabilities. This initiative represents a qualitative shift, reflecting the transition of the concept of integration from a social and humanitarian framework to a professional and productive one. The project aims to redefine the presence of individuals with disabilities in the media landscape, enabling them to become professional journalists, content creators, and active participants in shaping public opinion, in accordance with the highest professional standards recognized in the media sector.
The project extends the UAE’s vision, which has made empowerment a fundamental pillar for building an inclusive society, placing individuals with disabilities at the heart of its humanitarian and developmental agenda, recognizing them as a force capable of creativity and impact. The project’s vision revolves around building a leading generation of media professionals with disabilities, equipped with high professional competence that qualifies them to compete and produce in the job market, thus becoming an influential and creative force that reshapes the media landscape and leaves a genuine mark on content creation.
Commitment and Vision
Dr. Jamal Mohammed Obaid Al Kaabi, Secretary-General of the National Media Authority and Vice Chairman of the Bridge Alliance, confirmed that the project aligns with the UAE’s vision to build an inclusive society based on equal opportunities, enabling all its members to actively contribute to national development, in line with the country’s strategic directions. He noted that the project also reflects the state’s commitment to building an inclusive and competitive media landscape based on competence, knowledge, and responsibility, believing that human diversity is a source of strength and creativity, and that true and sustainable investment begins with people and their capabilities, without exception.
He added, “We aim to establish a new phase where individuals with disabilities are partners in news production and shaping public opinion. We believe that talent knows no physical limitations, and that authentic words and purposeful content are the true measures of excellence in our national media space. The modern media industry has become one of influence and awareness, which necessitates preparing professional cadres capable of working with high professionalism.”
Transformative Shift and Lasting Impact
Abdullah Abdul Ali Al Hamidan, Director General of the Zayed Authority for People of Determination, affirmed that the project embodies a shift in the concept of empowering individuals with disabilities, moving from social support to professional empowerment based on competence and productivity. He explained that the authority prioritizes qualifying individuals with disabilities to actively engage in the job market, especially in vital sectors like media, due to its crucial role in shaping societal awareness and correcting stereotypes.
He added, “Individuals with disabilities possess rich human experiences, authentic visions, and high creative abilities. However, the real challenge has always been the absence of organized professional pathways that allow them to enter the media market as professionals, not as exceptional participants. Hence, the importance of this project lies in its fundamental transition from symbolic representation to genuine professional empowerment.”
Pioneering Model for Empowerment
Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Ali, CEO of Trends, stated that the collaboration between Trends, the Zayed Authority for People of Determination, and the National Media Authority in this project represents a pioneering model for national partnership aimed at sustaining impact and developing skills. He said, “This project transcends the traditional concept of integration, leading us towards genuine professional empowerment that places individuals with disabilities at the heart of the media production process.”
Comprehensive Professional Program
The national project to prepare and empower professional media personnel with disabilities offers a comprehensive practical program that covers all stages of media empowerment, starting from specialized training and academic qualification, through practical field applications, to providing opportunities for media exposure and sustainable employment, all according to international professional standards that ensure individuals with disabilities can work in various media specialties with high efficiency and professionalism.
The program will initially cover six essential media specialties selected carefully to ensure quality and professional depth: political media, which addresses local and international political affairs; economic media, specializing in financial and economic news; social media, which deals with societal and humanitarian issues; sports media, covering events and sports championships; cultural media, focusing on arts, literature, and heritage; and digital knowledge media, which emphasizes educational and awareness-raising digital content, ensuring the establishment of a solid base of specialized media professionals.
The success of the project relies on building a comprehensive system of executive partnerships that ensure the transition of the training path from a theoretical framework to practical application, leading to professional sustainability. These partnerships encompass five key areas, including media partners from television, radio, and print institutions, media production partners from specialized production companies, digital platform partners from service providers and social media platforms, knowledge and training partners from universities and specialized institutes, and finally, employment and professional empowerment partners from both the public and private sectors, creating a supportive and sustainable work environment.
