Abu Dhabi’s Zayed National Museum is set to enrich its offerings with a unique guided tour titled “Between the Lines of Our History in UAE Sign Language.” This initiative, led by museum experience specialists from the deaf community, coincides with International Sign Language Day on September 23. The tour aims to provide a deeper understanding of the museum’s narrative while celebrating the rich history and culture of the United Arab Emirates.
Empowering the Deaf Community through Culture
Badr Al Maskari, a museum experience specialist who is deaf, sees his role as extending beyond just providing information to visitors. He expresses his pride in being one of the first specialists to conduct tours in UAE Sign Language at the Zayed National Museum. “To me, this role is not merely a task; it is a responsibility and a personal mission,” he shares. “Through these tours, I aim to share my passion for the history and culture of the UAE with the deaf community in our country. I strive to convey the museum’s stories and artefacts in a language that resonates with them, enhancing their sense of participation and belonging.”
A Welcoming Space for Engagement
Al Maskari emphasizes the joy he feels when witnessing deaf visitors engage with the museum experience. “Seeing members of the deaf community interact with the museum and discover an inviting space fills me with profound pride,” he adds. This initiative not only fosters inclusivity but also highlights the museum’s commitment to accessibility, ensuring that everyone can connect with the cultural treasures of the UAE.
With such initiatives, the Zayed National Museum continues to pave the way for a more inclusive environment, allowing diverse communities to appreciate the rich narratives of the UAE through their own lenses.
