Emirati Author Muhammad Al-Mar Shines at Abu Dhabi Book Fair

The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is set to honour Mohammed Al-Murr, the Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation Library, as the inaugural figure in its new annual initiative titled “Emirati Icons.” This recognition highlights the fair’s commitment to preserving the legacy of cultural pioneers and showcasing their remarkable contributions, particularly as role models for fostering culture and sustaining knowledge for future generations.

Throughout his distinguished career, Al-Murr has made a significant impact on the cultural landscape of the UAE. His efforts have been pivotal in safeguarding the country’s authentic heritage while strengthening the connection of new generations to their Arabic language, traditions, and intellectual identity. He has championed initiatives that place culture at the heart of the country’s development, acting as a bridge linking the past with the present and future. This work has further solidified the presence of Emirati culture on both regional and international stages.

The upcoming fair will feature a mural depicting Al-Murr’s life story, alongside a dedicated exhibition that showcases a wide array of his literary works and rare collections. Additionally, a documentary film will be presented in both Arabic and English, summarising his career. This will be complemented by other cultural activities designed to engage attendees and highlight the key aspects of his unique experiences in the field of culture and knowledge sustainability. Al-Murr’s national journey, his vision for building cultural institutions, and the influence of administrative and media thought on cultural renaissance will also be featured.

Creative Contributions

Al-Murr has authored twelve collections of stories that reflect the societal transformations in the UAE, having also delved deep into reality through journalistic articles compiled in several books. Two of these works have been included in the curricula of various universities across the country. His creative journey transitioned from theoretical writing to establishing cultural institutions, beginning with his presidency of the Cultural and Scientific Association established in 1987, to leading the Dubai Culture Council in 2004. Each role has paved the way toward larger ambitions, culminating in the establishment of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority in 2008.

In the media realm, Al-Murr has left a profound mark, having served as editor-in-chief for both the Gulf Times and Al-Bayan newspaper. His leadership reflected the pulse of the community, addressing issues surrounding culture, art, and society. His passion for knowledge and beauty has led him to pursue rare manuscripts, acquiring contemporary Arabic calligraphy and fine art, along with developing a keen interest in the history of postal services in the UAE and Oman. His private collection has emerged as one of the region’s most valuable reservoirs of knowledge. Despite these achievements, he has successfully continued his roles as Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Award for the Arabic Language and as Chairman of the Foundation’s Library, along with serving on various academic and cultural boards, continually sharing his expertise and enduring contributions.
