Emirates Airlines Literature Festival Debuts with 200 Speakers

The 18th edition of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature has officially kicked off in Dubai, showcasing the largest and most remarkable iteration in the event’s history. Running until January 27, this festival stands as a testament to the success it has achieved over the past eighteen years, establishing itself as a prominent cultural hub on the global creative map. The festival transcends mere literature, evolving into a vibrant space where ideas and visions converge.

A Thriving Week of Literary Engagement

Over the course of a week filled with discussions, workshops, and cultural activities, the festival will welcome nearly 200 speakers from over 40 countries. Esteemed authors such as Wole Soyinka, Hoda Barakat, and Oliver Jeffers will engage in enriching sessions, transforming Dubai into a lively meeting point between readers and creators, placing the festival at the heart of the city’s dynamic cultural scene.

Extensive Schedule and Highlights

Hosted at the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City, the festival boasts a diverse agenda featuring more than 200 events, including inspiring panels, interactive workshops, live performances, and family-oriented activities. The opening ceremony was marked by the presence of prominent figures such as Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi and other notable cultural leaders, highlighting the event’s significance on both a local and international level.

The opening ceremony featured a parade organized by the Dubai Police, complemented by a reflective presentation showcasing musical performances from various groups, enriching the atmosphere of anticipation for the festival’s extensive programming.

Voices of Influence and Cultural Celebration

Ahmad Bloqi, CEO of the Emirates Literature Foundation, remarked, “Since its inception, the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature has created a global platform uniting the most prominent literary and intellectual voices from around the region and the world.” She emphasized the ongoing commitment to enhancing the cultural and creative landscape within the UAE and beyond.

In support of this vision, Peter Peter, a key representative from Emirates Airlines, stated, “We take pride in sponsoring the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, as it continues to grow as one of the most diverse and inclusive cultural events in Dubai.” His comments reflect the festival’s role in fostering enriching interactions among audiences and creators alike.

A Celebration of Talent and Cultural Exchange

The initiative by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority underscores two main pillars: “By Emiratis,” which honors the best local creators, and “Translation,” which promotes the art of translation as a cultural bridge. This year, the festival also commemorates the centenary of the esteemed Emirati poet Sultan bin Ali Al Owais, further solidifying the UAE’s literary stature on a global scale.

As the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature continues through January 27, attendees can look forward to an exceptional week filled with creativity. From thematic discussions to hands-on workshops led by the world’s brightest literary minds, the festival invites all to explore new intellectual horizons and rediscover the joy of reading in a vibrant atmosphere that leaves an indelible mark.
