Enhancing Competition Law Expertise through Economic Growth and Tourism

In the current landscape of business and investment, the intersection of economics and tourism plays a crucial role in enhancing professional knowledge about competition law. Recent workshops have emerged as pivotal platforms for legal practitioners and economic experts to deepen their understanding of competition regulations and their practical applications. By shedding light on the importance of competition law, these initiatives contribute to creating a more competitive and inviting business environment that encourages investment and innovation.

Workshop Focused on Competition Law

Recently, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism organized a specialized workshop titled “Competition Law Under the Microscope,” in collaboration with Covington & Burling and Al Tamimi & Company. The goal was to support and enhance professional knowledge among legal experts and specialists in the country regarding the best practical practices of competition law. This initiative is designed to raise awareness of economic concentrations and complaint mechanisms, ultimately fostering a more competitive and attractive investment climate.

Context and Participation

The workshop coincided with the fourth edition of the “Abu Dhabi Financial Week,” attracting over 170 lawyers, experts, and specialists in both legal and economic fields, alongside various regional and international entities. Safia Al Safi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Regulation and Governance at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, emphasized that this workshop is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to develop the national competition system. This commitment aims to establish a transparent, efficient, and competitive business environment, enhancing capabilities and fostering a deeper professional understanding of competition-related laws and procedures.

Key Areas Discussed

During the workshop, discussions focused on legislative and regulatory advancements in competition law, oversight of economic concentrations, and mechanisms for addressing complaints and anti-competitive practices. Mohammed Sultan Al Jenae, Director of the Competition Department, affirmed the workshop’s significance, particularly as it has been tailored for legal professionals. It provides a professional space for lawyers and specialists to deepen their legal and practical understanding of competition law while facilitating collaboration between relevant governmental and private sector bodies.

Recent Developments in the UAE’s Competition Framework

The sessions also highlighted recent developments in the UAE’s competition system, including updates to the legal and executive frameworks, advancements in monitoring economic concentrations, and the unification of concepts related to notification thresholds and approval mechanisms. Furthermore, practical aspects concerning complaints and anti-competitive behaviors were addressed, alongside discussions on the role of law enforcement in protecting markets from unfair practices, thereby ensuring equal opportunities among enterprises.

As the economy and tourism sectors evolve, the collaboration between legal frameworks and industry practices remains crucial in promoting a vibrant business environment. Enhancing professional knowledge about competition law not only supports sustainable economic growth but also empowers stakeholders to navigate the complexities of modern markets effectively.
