The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has launched a trial operation for its new automated transport system, dubbed “Dubai Glidways.” This system utilises electric autonomous vehicles powered by artificial intelligence and operates on dedicated routes, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Trial Operation Commences
Matar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the RTA, embarked on a ride aboard the “Dubai Glidways” vehicle, marking the official commencement of this four-week trial period.
Route Details
The launch took place on a specified route in the Bluewaters area, with the initial journey lasting five minutes.
Objectives and Capacity
This innovative transport initiative aims to enhance the public transport system, expand mobility options for residents and visitors, and improve access to metro stations and key areas across the emirate, as stated by WAM. Each vehicle has a capacity of four to six passengers and operates at a speed of up to 50 kilometres per hour, with a range of 250 kilometres on a single battery charge.
Future Developments
The system has the potential to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions. Future plans associated with the project include exploring additional routes that connect Dubai Metro stations to various locations, including Jumeirah Village, Festival City, Business Bay, and Mohammed Bin Rashid City. These enhancements aim to further integrate with the Dubai Metro network and elevate accessibility to various destinations.
