In a significant step towards enhancing the infrastructure of Dubai‘s road networks, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the awarding of the second phase contract for the development of Hessa Street. This project, vital for accommodating the emirate’s ongoing urban growth and population increase, stretches over 3 kilometers and will upgrade key intersections to significantly boost traffic capacity. As the urban landscape of Dubai evolves, the Hessa Street project promises to transform transportation efficiency, benefiting approximately 650,000 residents.
Details of the Second Phase
The second phase of the Hessa Street development continues the milestones set in the first phase, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026. According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, the project will enhance the intersection at Hessa Street and Al Khail Street, increasing the number of lanes from two to four in each direction. This extensive upgrade also includes the construction of overpasses and bridges, which will facilitate smoother traffic flow and ultimately double the road’s capacity from 4,000 vehicles per hour to an impressive 8,000 vehicles per hour.
Key Features of the Project
The project’s scope encompasses three main intersections, with engineering works including the creation of 8,835 meters of bridges and a 480-meter tunnel. Additionally, various connecting streets will be improved, contributing to significant reductions in travel time—from 24 minutes down to just five minutes for commuters. Notably, this initiative will serve ten residential and developmental areas, bolstering the infrastructure in regions such as Dubai Hills, Motor City, and Jumeirah Village Circle.
Impact on Traffic Flow
With the anticipated increase in traffic flow, daily movements on the affected routes are expected to rise to almost half a million trips. The expansion will not only accommodate twice the number of vehicles but also create pathways for bicycle and electric scooter users, linking several communities and promoting sustainable mobility. This strategic development reflects Dubai’s commitment to maintaining an advanced and efficient urban transport system, aligning with global standards for modern city infrastructure.
Completion Timeline and Expectations
As the RTA prepares to unveil the completed first phase of the Hessa Street project in April of next year, anticipation builds for the benefits the second phase will bring. Enhanced travel times, increased safety measures, and expanded capacity are just a few of the expectations surrounding this transformative project. The proactive measures from the RTA are set to shape the future of mobility in Dubai and deliver lasting advantages for its residents and visitors alike.
