Dubai Ports World Launches Groundbreaking Logistics Corridor in Pakistan

The establishment of the “Bibiri” logistics corridor by DP World marks a significant milestone in enhancing shipping operations in Pakistan. In collaboration with Pakistan Railways and the National Logistics Cell (NLC), this initiative aims to streamline the movement of goods between Karachi’s ports and domestic markets, ultimately transforming the logistics landscape of the region. By shifting container transport from road to rail, the project promises improved efficiency and reduced congestion.

Recently, DP World, Pakistan Railways, and NLC officially commenced the construction of the multi-modal logistics corridor in the Bibiri area following a groundbreaking ceremony held on site.

The primary goal of this project is to strengthen the shipping link between Karachi’s ports and the internal markets of Pakistan by transitioning container traffic from road transport to rail. This shift is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of logistics and reduce delays in the supply chain.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Railways, Hanif Abbasi, and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the Chairman and CEO of DP World. Senior officials from NLC and Pakistan Railways, along with representatives from various port and terminal authorities, were also present to witness this pivotal development.

This collaborative project focuses on developing a comprehensive center for railway and logistics services, aimed at improving the speed, reliability, and efficiency of import and export operations. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in modernizing logistics capabilities within Pakistan.

The first phase of the project involves the rehabilitation of a 52-kilometer railway corridor connecting Karachi Port to a logistics hub in Bibiri, alongside the establishment of a state-of-the-art multi-modal logistics complex.

The Bibiri facility will integrate railway, road, and port operations into a single logistics center, providing a full range of services, including warehousing, cargo handling, shipment consolidation, and value-added logistics solutions. The first phase of the project is anticipated to be completed within four months.

Once operational, the new facility is projected to greatly alleviate congestion at Karachi’s ports, diverting heavy container traffic from the city’s roads and substantially reducing logistics costs and transit times. Additionally, it aims to cut carbon emissions and extend the lifespan of vital road infrastructure.

Containers arriving at Karachi will be transported directly via rail to Bibiri. From there, goods will be shipped across Pakistan by rail and road, as well as to regional markets including China and Central Asia. For export shipments from Pakistan, the route will revert to Karachi’s ports.

This initiative is expected to support the consolidation of cargo handling operations in Bibiri, thereby mitigating truck congestion in Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, and improving response times across various stages of the supply chain.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem emphasized that this project reflects DP World’s long-standing commitment to developing world-class trade infrastructure and resilient supply chains that effectively connect markets. By integrating railway, road, and port infrastructure, the logistics corridor and multi-modal services in Bibiri will enhance the efficiency of trade flow, support sustainable logistics practices, and bolster Pakistan’s position as a key regional trade gateway.

Earlier this year, DP World, NLC, and Pakistan Railways had signed a memorandum of understanding in January, followed by a commercial agreement in the final quarter of the same year.
