In a major move aimed at enhancing accessibility for travelers, Dubai Airports has successfully completed the installation of over 520 hearing loops at Dubai International Airport. This groundbreaking initiative represents one of the largest installations of its kind globally, emphasizing the airport’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all passengers.
Enhancing Accessibility for Hearing Aid Users
The installation of these 520 hearing loops seeks to improve mobility for users of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Strategically placed in critical areas throughout the airport, these loops are designed to enhance sound quality at check-in counters, immigration procedures, boarding gates, and information desks across all three terminals. By implementing this innovative technology, Dubai Airports strengthens its position as a leading global destination for accessible travel.
Seamless Activation for Passengers
Passengers can easily activate the hearing loop service by selecting the “T” function on their devices, eliminating the need for pairing or additional equipment. This user-friendly approach is intended to facilitate a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience for individuals with hearing impairments.
Commitment to an Inclusive Travel Experience
Majid Al Joker, the Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, stated, “This initiative underscores Dubai Airports’ commitment to providing an inclusive travel environment for all guests, allowing them to navigate the airport’s facilities with ease and convenience. The installation of 520 hearing loops represents a significant achievement that embodies the close collaboration within the oneDXB airport community and transforms our vision of more accessible travel into a reality benefiting millions.”
Collaborative Efforts for a Unified Vision
This project has been launched in partnership with strategic allies within the oneDXB airport community, including Emirates, Flydubai, Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, and various other stakeholders. Such collaborations highlight the spirit of partnership that characterizes Dubai International Airport’s operational ecosystem.
Complying with the “Dubai Accessible Environment Code,” this initiative ensures barrier-free access to public spaces and transportation. Notably, the installation was executed without disrupting operational procedures, and frontline staff received specialized training to provide optimal support to travelers with disabilities.
A Growing Need for Enhanced Communication Systems
This initiative is timely, given reports from the World Health Organization indicating that over 1.5 billion people worldwide experience varying degrees of hearing loss, with projections suggesting this number could rise to 2.5 billion by 2050. Thus, providing accessible communication systems is essential for international travel hubs. The installation of hearing loops forms part of Dubai Airports’ long-term strategy to enhance the travel experience by developing infrastructure and launching specialized training programs for staff.
The strategy is centered on meeting the needs of all passengers, ensuring they feel welcomed and valued at every stage of their journey, from the curb to the boarding gate. By prioritizing accessibility, Dubai Airports not only sets a standard in the aviation industry but also paves the way for a more inclusive future.
