Dubai Airports Welcomes 6 Million Travelers Amidst Adversity

Dubai, May 4, 2026 – Since the onset of regional unrest last February, Dubai International Airport has maintained a steady flow of air traffic, welcoming 6 million passengers through Dubai’s airports. Despite the challenges faced, the airports managed operations efficiently, reflecting the sector’s resilience and readiness to meet travelers’ needs.

In the first quarter of 2026, Dubai’s airports experienced a 20.6% decline in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, receiving 18.6 million guests. However, during the period of unrest that began on February 28 and continued until the end of April, the airports successfully facilitated the movement of 6 million guests, with over 32,000 flights, demonstrating Dubai’s capability to handle crises effectively.

Operational Continuity Amid Crises

Throughout the regional unrest, Dubai International Airport maintained continuity in flight operations despite significant restrictions imposed on airspace. Since February 28, Dubai Airport has contributed to the transport of over 6 million passengers and handled approximately 213,000 tons of vital cargo, showcasing the sector’s adaptability to changing conditions.

Thanks to effective coordination among various stakeholders within the airport community, Dubai ensured the continuity of operations in a safe and stable manner. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, stated, “The exceptional developments witnessed in recent weeks have posed an unprecedented challenge.” This remark underscores the importance of maintaining smooth passenger and cargo movement during crises.

Growth and Recovery Post-Unrest

With the lifting of airspace restrictions, Dubai’s airports have entered the next phase of recovery, increasing the number of daily flights and gradually rescheduling operations. Strong demand is expected to facilitate a rapid recovery for the sector, as many other global airports struggle to meet this demand.

Dubai is a global aviation hub, with Dubai International Airport handling 32% of the transit traffic in the Middle East. As conditions stabilize, the sector is anticipated to see a swift rebound. According to Griffiths, “This readiness will help us meet the renewed demand as we restore capacity.”

Dubai Airport Traffic in the First Quarter of 2026

In the first quarter of 2026, Dubai International Airport welcomed 18.6 million guests, while passenger traffic in March reached 2.5 million, reflecting a sharp decline of 65.7%. Despite the challenges, key destinations such as India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom continued to attract many travelers, highlighting Dubai Airport’s significance in global air traffic.

Cargo operations also saw a decline, with 399,600 tons handled in the first quarter, down 22.7% from the previous year. However, these figures reflect cautious optimism amid challenges, positioning Dubai International Airport ideally to accommodate increased air traffic in the coming months.
