In a remarkable achievement, Dubai International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest international airport in terms of scheduled seat capacity for July 2026. With a total of 4.35 million seats, it surpassed London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, Seoul Incheon, and Paris Charles de Gaulle, according to data from the UK-based aviation analytics company OAG.
Dubai’s Unrivalled Growth
Following closely behind, Heathrow claimed the second spot with 4.23 million seats, reflecting a 1% decline. Schiphol secured third position with 3.82 million seats, a growth of 1%, while Incheon and Charles de Gaulle took the fourth and fifth ranks with 3.75 million and 3.70 million seats, respectively, both on par with the previous year. Notably, Dubai Airport’s scheduled international seat capacity reflected an 18% increase compared to July 2025.
Sustained Leadership in Early 2026
Earlier this year, Dubai International Airport not only held its position as the busiest airport in January 2026, with 5.5 million seats, but also maintained its lead in February with 4.9 million seats, marking a 2% year-on-year growth, as reported by OAG. Throughout 2025, the airport served a record 62.4 million international passengers, illustrating a 4% increase from 2024, thus solidifying its status as the world’s most trafficked airport for international travellers, as per Dubai Airports‘ announcements.
In the first quarter of 2026, Dubai International welcomed 18.6 million guests, as “Dubai Airports” managed over six million passengers, paving the way for an expansion of its operations and increased air traffic in line with the available routes in the region as air travel stabilizes.
Innovations in Passenger Experience
Enhancing the travel experience, Dubai Airports has launched a new tool for Smart Gates eligibility pre-check. This development, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, enables passengers to receive instant confirmation of their eligibility before reaching the passport control area. According to a post by Dubai Airports on X, the tool can be accessed via the Pocket Flights app or through QR codes available throughout the terminals and gates.
Integrated within the smart gate system, the initiative is part of more extensive measures introduced by Dubai’s residency authority, which in 2021 initiated operations of 122 smart gates in departure and arrival halls. These gates allow pre-registered travellers to pass through using biometric recognition within five seconds, without needing travel documents.
Further innovations include the introduction of the “Red Carpet” passage in August 2025, designed to expedite the passport control process for groups. This unique system can accommodate up to ten travellers simultaneously, utilizing real-time biometric data to process entries in a timeframe ranging from six to fourteen seconds.
Additionally, the airport offers early baggage check-in options outside the terminals, fast lanes for families and seniors, real-time baggage tracking systems via smart applications, and digital signage to facilitate navigation across the airport.
