The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism has unveiled an expanded retail calendar during a high-level forum hosted by the Indian Business and Professional Council in Dubai. This new schedule for the years 2026 and 2027 features a specialised 10-day electronics festival set to launch in April 2027. This initiative underscores Dubai’s vision to enhance its status as a leading global destination for shopping, tourism, and entertainment while fostering growth in the retail sector through innovative events and unique experiences throughout the year.
Forum Insights and Retail Strategies
The forum, organised by the Retail, Hospitality, and Tourism Sector Focus Group, brought together officials from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, Nielsen IQ, and prominent retail leaders to discuss market trends, promotional strategies, and growth opportunities in one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets.
Integral Approach to Economic Growth
Mohammad Firas Ariqat, Acting Vice President of Retail Calendar Management and Promotions at the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, emphasised the integrated approach adopted by the emirate. This strategy connects the retail, tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors, serving as a cornerstone of Dubai’s annual calendar. He noted that major events benefit not only shopping centres but also hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions, thereby stimulating economic activity across various sectors.
Expanded Annual Events Calendar
Over the past decade, Dubai’s annual events calendar has broadened from 12 events to over 80, featuring significant happenings such as Dubai Summer Surprises, Dubai Summer Mega Sale, Back to School campaigns, and initiatives supporting entrepreneurs, along with economic incentives for local businesses. Seasonal holidays, the UAE National Day, and major sporting and entertainment events are identified as key drivers for retail sector growth in the upcoming period.
Data-Driven Retail Analysis
Ariqat further explained that the department is collaborating with payment networks and strategic partners to develop an advanced dashboard for retail analytics. This tool will provide accurate data on consumer spending, the fastest-growing retail categories, and commercial site performance, enabling businesses to make more informed decisions. He also highlighted that artificial intelligence plays a supportive role in business strategies, rather than serving as a replacement.
Market Growth Indicators
Nielsen IQ presented the latest market indicators, which revealed a 7.3% growth in the fast-moving consumer goods sector in the UAE. E-commerce accounted for 13% of sector sales and showed an impressive growth rate of 23%, in stark contrast to the 2.4% growth of traditional channels. Additionally, the size of the consumer electronics market in the UAE has reached approximately AED 8.7 billion, buoyed by the expansion of e-commerce and changing consumer behaviour.
