DEWA Achieves Remarkable Recycling of 119K Aluminum and Plastic Containers

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to reinforce a culture of sustainability among its employees, encouraging responsible environmental practices both in the workplace and beyond. In the first half of 2026, DEWA staff successfully recycled a remarkable 118,967 plastic and aluminium containers using smart recycling machines installed across several of its buildings. These machines are integrated with the Authority’s smart office application, allowing employees to earn points for every recycling action, which qualify them for monthly draws with valuable prizes.

Significant Recycling Achievements

Since the launch of this initiative and the installation of the smart recycling machines in October 2022, DEWA employees have recycled over 1.41 million plastic and aluminium containers, effectively diverting more than 19.83 tonnes of waste from landfills. This achievement underscores the Authority’s commitment to fostering sustainable habits and practices among its workforce.

Aligning with Dubai’s Waste Management Strategy

DEWA’s recycling initiative aligns seamlessly with Dubai’s Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041, which aims to drive innovation in waste management and recycling while converting waste into energy. It also supports DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy, which focuses on five fundamental principles: circular design and the use of recyclable materials, optimal asset management, value preservation and end-of-life processing, and the promotion of renewable energy alongside water and energy efficiency, in addition to fostering circular partnerships.

Engaging the Value Chain

The initiative highlights the role of various stakeholders in the value chain at DEWA, including smart users, circular procurement, and engaging suppliers in achieving sustainability objectives. This comprehensive approach ensures that all facets of the organisation are working towards a common goal of environmental responsibility.

A Model of Sustainability Awareness

Furthermore, DEWA has achieved an impressive score of 92.33% on the Sustainability Culture Index for 2025, which measures employee awareness and application of sustainability concepts in their daily lives. Through these efforts, DEWA not only promotes sustainability within its workforce but also contributes positively to the broader community and environment.
