The Coral Beach Resort in Sharjah has positioned itself as a leader in sustainable hospitality by launching the emirate’s first bioreactor for processing food waste. This innovative technology reflects the resort’s commitment to implementing environmentally friendly solutions aimed at reducing food waste and minimising its operational environmental impact.
Innovative Technology for Waste Reduction
The bioreactor employs natural microorganisms and oxygen to decompose organic food waste, transforming it into greywater. This allows the resort to process food waste on-site, negating the need for transportation to landfills, thus significantly reducing methane emissions and carbon footprint associated with waste collection and disposal.
A Step Towards Sustainable Water Usage
Additionally, the system enhances the resort’s water conservation efforts, as the resulting greywater from the digestion process is reused for irrigating gardens and green areas within the resort. This establishes a practical circular economy model that turns food waste into a valuable resource.
Supporting Sharjah’s Sustainable Tourism Vision
The introduction of the bioreactor aligns with Coral Beach Resort’s sustainability initiatives and supports the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority’s carbon footprint programme aimed at curbing food waste and minimising the environmental impact of the hospitality sector. This follows Sharjah’s vision to enhance its status as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.
Continuing Commitment to Sustainability
The resort continues to implement high-impact sustainability initiatives, including establishing the first in-house drinking water bottling plant in Northern Emirates hotels, which has helped eliminate single-use plastic bottles. Other notable projects include “Coral Organic,” an organic farming initiative, energy and water conservation programmes, and various initiatives focused on waste reduction and resource efficiency.
Iftikhar Hamdani, Regional General Manager of Coral Beach Resort Sharjah, expressed pride in being the first hotel in the emirate to operate this innovative food waste processing technology. He stated, “This project not only introduces a new technique but embodies our commitment to impactful environmental solutions. It further supports our ongoing efforts to reduce our ecological footprint, benefiting our guests, the community, and future generations.”
Acknowledgements and Future Plans
This achievement adds to the resort’s sustainability legacy, recognised by the “Sharjah Sustainability Award” at the Sharjah International Travel and Tourism Forum 2025, organised by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, in recognition of its commitment to adopting best environmental practices in the hospitality industry.
With the bioreactor now fully operational, Coral Beach Resort Sharjah exemplifies a hotel model that combines service excellence with environmental responsibility, contributing to sustainable development goals in Sharjah and inspiring the hospitality sector to adopt innovative solutions to reduce food waste and enhance resource management.
