In a significant move towards peace in the Middle East, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for all relevant parties to return to the negotiating table. This statement was made during his meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on the sidelines of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
Promoting Diplomatic Solutions in the Middle East
Wang Yi emphasised China’s readiness to collaborate with the international community to find political solutions to ongoing regional crises. He underlined that achieving peace and reconciliation is a cornerstone of China’s policy towards the Middle East, and he stressed the necessity for heightened diplomatic efforts given the continued tensions in the region.
Historical Perspectives on Negotiations
During their conversation, Wang Yi referenced the views of former Israeli President Chaim Herzog, the father of the current president. Wang noted that Chaim Herzog had highlighted the significance of compromise and dialogue in his memoirs, suggesting that concessions could foster trust and lead to meaningful gains among conflicting parties. According to the Chinese official, this historical perspective remains relevant in the current context and reinforces the importance of pursuing peace and common ground to resolve conflicts.
Israeli Support for China’s Peace Efforts
In response, President Herzog voiced his appreciation for China’s role in promoting peace and stability both regionally and globally. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to peace and its desire to avoid war, although he acknowledged the security threats and challenges the nation faces. Herzog expressed Israel’s interest in engaging with China’s initiatives and its willingness to maintain open communication with Beijing.
Commitment to Continued Diplomatic Efforts
Wang Yi further mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping had introduced several initiatives aimed at enhancing peace and security in the Middle East earlier this year. He reaffirmed that China will persist in supporting efforts to bring involved parties back to negotiations and seek political solutions that contribute to stability and open pathways for conflict resolution, as stated by the Chinese foreign ministry.
