The logistics sector plays a vital role in the economy, and the United Arab Emirates has set ambitious goals to enhance its contribution, targeting an increase from around 136.7 billion dirhams in 2024 to over 200 billion dirhams within the next seven years. This initiative aims to position the UAE as a global logistics hub, bolstered by advanced infrastructure and innovative services.
Strategic Vision for Growth
During the inaugural meeting of the Emirates Logistics Integration Council, chaired by Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei, it was emphasized that these targets align with the “We the UAE 2031” vision. This vision seeks to elevate the country into the top three globally in the logistics performance index through improved infrastructure, smart services, and integrated systems that boost global trade and keep pace with the latest developments in supply chains.
Digital and Green Transition
Al Mazrouei pointed out that the council will launch quality initiatives aimed at enhancing digital and green transformations within the transportation and logistics sectors. This includes expanding smart solutions, reducing carbon emissions, and balancing economic growth with environmental protection, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development.
Collaboration and Expertise Exchange
The council will serve as a platform for cooperation and knowledge exchange among federal and local entities involved in the logistics sector. Al Mazrouei reaffirmed, “The UAE’s strategic location, coupled with advanced logistics infrastructure, positions the nation as a global trade, re-export, and logistics hub.” He stressed that collective efforts between federal and local authorities and the private sector are crucial for achieving the council’s targets, fostering a more efficient and sustainable logistics sector that aligns with the UAE’s 50-year aspirations and enhances its global competitiveness.
Logistics as an Economic Pillar
The logistics sector is integral to the national economy, significantly contributing to GDP and providing thousands of quality job opportunities. It also plays a pivotal role in attracting foreign investments and strengthening the UAE’s reputation as a reliable and advanced business environment. Al Mazrouei highlighted that in 2023, the UAE achieved a remarkable milestone by ranking seventh globally, underscoring the substantial investments in fostering advanced infrastructure.
Ongoing Development and Streamlined Processes
As the logistics sector continues to evolve, Al Mazrouei noted that integration and cooperation will enhance efficiency, lower costs, and improve user experience. The Emirates Logistics Integration Council comprises various stakeholders from the logistics industry at both federal and local levels, ensuring synchronized policies and strategies to facilitate the smooth flow of goods and support the nation’s competitiveness.
The formation of this council is part of a national effort to unify visions and coordinate roles among different stakeholders, thus enhancing the efficiency of the logistics sector and establishing the UAE as a pivotal link in the global trade system. The council’s initial meeting focused on crucial areas related to logistics integration in the UAE to promote connectivity among various transportation modes, aligning with the shift toward digital solutions essential for national strategies.
Looking ahead, the council will also work on implementing a national logistics integration strategy and addressing digital platform needs, with sub-teams set up to track recommendations and reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies.
In its first meeting, the council highlighted ways to strengthen partnerships with the private sector, recognizing it as a key ally in development efforts. This partnership is expected to solidify the UAE’s status as a preferred destination for global investment in this crucial sector, alongside discussions on the role of air cargo in supporting economic growth and the nation’s global competitiveness.
