Bodour Al Qasimi Receives Italy’s Officer of Merit Honor

In recognition of her long-standing efforts to strengthen cultural ties between Italy and the UAE, Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Education and Book Culture, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic at the rank of Officer, one of Italy’s highest honours.

The decoration was conferred by Lorenzo Fanara, Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to the UAE, on behalf of Italian President Sergio Mattarella, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. The official ceremony was held at the Middle House in the UAE on 13 July, during which Sheikha Bodour also received the certificate of recognition.

A tribute to cultural dialogue

The award reflects Sheikha Bodour’s contribution to using books, education, culture and international dialogue as tools to build bridges of communication and mutual understanding between peoples.

Italy’s Order of Merit

The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, established by Italy’s second president, Luigi Einaudi, in 1951, is the country’s highest national honour. It is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions in service of Italy in the fields of literature, the arts, education, public service, the economy, humanitarian and charitable work, as well as distinguished civil and military achievements.

Two decades of leadership through books and education

The honour recognises more than two decades of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi’s leadership in efforts that have made books, education and culture effective instruments of international cooperation. Through her initiatives in higher education, publishing, promoting reading and humanitarian work, she has reinforced her belief that genuine dialogue between nations begins with greater understanding among peoples.
