Beha Mimouni Crowned Champion of the Tenth Arab Reading Challenge

In a remarkable display of literary passion and academic prowess, the Arab Reading Challenge crowned fifth-grade student Bahaa Mimouni as the champion of its tenth edition in Tunisia. The announcement came during a grand finale held in the capital, where participants representing 3481 schools and overseen by 6535 supervisors competed passionately, including an impressive turnout of 232,865 students.

Celebrating Achievements in Education

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Iman Ahmed Salami, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Tunisia, alongside Dr. Fawzan Al-Khalidi, Director of Programs and Initiatives at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Foundation. They were joined by representatives from Tunisia’s Ministry of Education and key figures from the Arab Reading Challenge initiative, all celebrating this educational milestone. The occasion garnered considerable attention from the educational community and parents of the participating students.

Acknowledging Excellence Across Categories

In addition to Bahaa’s triumph, Munir Al-Freiji from Siliana was named “Outstanding Supervisor,” while Sidi Amer School, also from Siliana, received the title of “Outstanding School.” The event also highlighted the achievements of students with special needs, with ninth-grade student Rawan Ashbuli from Borj Bou Arreridj taking first place in her category.

Highlighting a Promising Future

A total of ten students reached the final stage of the competition. Alongside Bahaa, they included Abdul Hadi Adeb, Bilqis Fazai, Ayat Qaytoni, Islam Majoul, Farida Tareefi, Rawa Harabi, Sirin Benhamel, Tasnim Benkaji, and Nour Al-Islam Farhati. Their participation underscores the growing enthusiasm for reading among Tunisia’s youth.

A Commitment to Literacy and Learning

Tunisian Minister of Education, Noureddine Al-Nouri, expressed the significance of this annual event as a celebration of literacy and the vital role reading plays in shaping the minds of future generations. He remarked, “This opportunity reflects the commitment of our students to engage in the project and their desire to enrich themselves through diverse reading sources.”

He further stated that the participation of over 232,000 students demonstrates a genuine interest in reading, considering it a strategic foundation for enhancing educational quality. The ministry views reading as a key approach to facilitate personal development and improve comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking skills in students.

Continuing the Momentum for Future Generations

Dr. Fawzan Al-Khalidi highlighted that the Arab Reading Challenge has ignited a cultural renaissance, affirming its mission of fostering a love for knowledge and the Arabic language in youth. He acknowledged the participation growth and the exemplary model of academic distinction presented by Tunisian students. “We believe that each book read by today’s students lays a cornerstone for a brighter, more prosperous Arab future,” he said.

This year’s challenge surpassed previous records, engaging over 40 million students from 60 countries, including 74,062 students with special needs, marking a significant increase from the prior edition. The challenge continues to be a beacon of hope for the future of literacy in the Arab world, emphasising the importance of reading and intellectual growth in shaping a knowledgeable society.
