Barrafina Dubai Delivers Exceptional Culinary Delight

Review: Barrafina Dubai

Barrafina Dubai arrives as the much-anticipated first international venture of the renowned Spanish tapas bar, famous for its vibrant counter dining and delectable small plates. With its roots tracing back to London, the restaurant brings a slice of authentic Spanish cuisine to the heart of Dubai’s DIFC. This review delves into what makes Barrafina Dubai a must-visit for food enthusiasts and how it honors the legacy of tapas in a modern setting.

The Spot

Barrafina began its journey in Soho, London, in 2007, rapidly popularizing the art of queuing for quality food. After relocating to Dean Street in 2016, the brand has since expanded to five locations across London, each garnering long lines of eager diners. Now, with the inception of Barrafina Dubai, the brand confidently marks its first international presence, part of a broader strategy to extend its reach throughout the GCC. Featuring 55 seats adorned with signature ruby-red leather stools, marble accents, and gleaming stainless steel, the atmosphere reflects the essence of Spanish dining. An open kitchen design brings chefs into the spotlight, allowing patrons to witness the art of preparation up close.

The Food

At Barrafina Dubai, the essence of tapas comes alive with dishes crafted for sharing and enjoyment. Here, every bite is designed to be sizzling and enjoyed in vibrant company. The ambiance is electrified by the harmonious sounds of the Josper oven and the skilled choreography of the chefs at work.

Starting with the prawn-stuffed croquetas, these gems are nothing short of divine. They boast a crispy exterior that gives way to a rich, molten center infused with marine flavors. The pan con tomate is presented on thick slices of crusty sourdough and lavishly adorned with sweet, garlicky tomato purée, drizzled with olive oil and topped with chives.

The classic egg and potato tortilla is designed to spark debate among diners with its intentionally loose, almost runny texture—authentic to its Spanish origins. The menu also features a blackboard of daily specials, which should not be overlooked. On our visit, the standout was the Carabineros prawns: stunningly deep-red treasures, prepared simply yet elegantly, and enhanced with a sprinkling of sea salt. These were, without a doubt, a highlight.

For vegetable lovers, the escalivada is a must-try. This dish showcases coal-roasted vegetables, their skins charred to perfection and peeled to reveal a smoky, tender core. It was so exceptional that we ordered it twice, a testament to its flavor.

The Service

The service at Barrafina Dubai is both friendly and impressively composed. Dishes arrive promptly at the table, accompanied by concise yet engaging descriptions delivered in an authentic Spanish lilt, adding to the overall dining experience.

What’s on the Bill

The pricing at Barrafina Dubai remains reasonable for the quality offered. Here’s a brief overview of some key menu items:

  • Pan con tomate: Dhs 45
  • Patatas bravas: Dhs 50
  • Classic tortilla: Dhs 65
  • Prawn croquetas: Dhs 75

Verdict

Barrafina Dubai emerges as a thrilling and faithful representation of its London predecessor, delivering a deeply satisfying experience for diners. Though queues may not yet be forming, it’s only a matter of time before this vibrant eatery captures the attention of Dubai’s food lovers.
