Abu Dhabi’s Innovative Roads and Bridges Ease Musaffah Traffic

The Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi has announced an ambitious development plan aimed at enhancing the roadway infrastructure within the Mussafah area. This initiative is expected to significantly improve transportation links between the industrial zone and key urban centres, including Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Zayed City.

Project Overview

Spanning approximately 13 kilometres, the project will run along the E30 road and Street 8 in Mussafah, primarily targeting traffic congestion relief, road safety enhancement, and overall travel time reduction. A key component of the project will be the construction of a new expressway along Street 8, which will comprise three lanes in each direction, flanked by three additional lanes on either side. This design seeks to facilitate easier access to shops, amenities, and services within the area without hindering the flow of traffic on the expressway. The overall capacity of the road is anticipated to accommodate about 4,000 vehicles per hour.

Infrastructure Improvements

The development plan also includes upgrades to four major intersections on the E30 road and improved connectivity with Street 8 and the E20 road. Furthermore, modifications will take place at nine key intersections, and plans are in motion to build two new bridges linking Mussafah with Mohammed Bin Zayed City, along with a dedicated pedestrian bridge.

Supporting Regional Growth

Issa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, the Director General of Infrastructure Development at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, articulated the significance of the road network in serving a wide range of users. “The road network in Mussafah supports a broad demographic, from residents commuting to work to businesses transporting goods and individuals relying on local transit throughout the day,” he stated. He emphasised that planning for such diverse needs is essential to foster the sustained growth of the area. By separating through traffic from local access and improving connectivity with surrounding communities, the initiative aims to boost economic activity while making daily commutes more accessible and safer.

A Vision for the Future

Al Mazrouei added that this forward-looking approach will equip the road network for future connections, ensuring that today’s decisions bolster the ongoing developmental trajectory of Abu Dhabi. This infrastructure project is part of broader efforts to enhance connectivity across the emirate, which includes plans for a maritime link through two underwater tunnels connecting the eastern edge of Abu Dhabi Island with Mussafah, passing beneath the Al Maqta Waterway and the Al Hudayriyat Channel.

As Abu Dhabi forges ahead with these significant developments, the city continues to pave the way for improved transportation capabilities that will ultimately support both current needs and future growth demands.
