In a significant crackdown on traffic violations, Abu Dhabi Police have impounded 9,237 electric scooters over a ten-month period in 2026. The majority of these violations stemmed from the misuse of scooters on public roads, among vehicles, and in areas not designated for their use, posing serious risks to both riders and other road users.
Dangerous Riding Habits Identified
The Directorate of Traffic and Patrols highlighted alarming trends in riding behaviours that contribute to road accidents. Among the most dangerous practices noted were operating scooters in the midst of vehicular traffic, a lack of attention to surrounding traffic flow, and the absence of protective gear such as helmets. These factors significantly raise the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities in the event of an accident.
Safety Protocols for Electric Scooter Users
To mitigate risks and enhance the safety of all road users, the police department emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations governing electric scooter use. Riders are urged to use designated paths for scooters, wear appropriate safety gear, including helmets, and avoid riding on main roads and in traffic. Adopting these practices is crucial for safeguarding both their own safety and that of others on the road.
