In the heart of Dubai, a remarkable collection known as the Yves Gastou collection of men’s rings is making waves among art enthusiasts and collectors alike. Curated over four decades, this extraordinary array boasts over 1,000 rings that encapsulate a rich tapestry of history and artistry. Victor Gastou, son of the late gallerist Yves Gastou, now carries the torch in sharing this tale of passion and craftsmanship, inviting viewers to explore the fascinating stories behind each piece.
The Legacy of Yves Gastou
Victor Gastou sits comfortably, a velvet pouch tied with a red ribbon cradled in his hands. Inside lies a selection of men’s rings, together embodying centuries of history. This is just a small insight into his father Yves Gastou’s expansive collection of over 1,000 rings, a testament to a lifelong adventure in treasure hunting.
Amassed by the late gallerist and art dealer Yves Gastou, this collection carries a weight far beyond mere jewelry. It chronicles exquisite craftsmanship, rich histories, and an unyielding passion for art that spans continents and centuries. “Yes, this story is about rings, but also passion,” Victor shared in an exclusive interview.
First introduced in Paris in 2018, the Yves Gastou collection of men’s rings has now found a temporary home in Dubai, marking a significant milestone in its global journey. The exhibition is thoughtfully organized into five themes deeply rooted in Yves’ personal aesthetics: History, Gothic, Christian Mysticism, Vanitas, and Eclecticism.
Stories Behind the Rings
Among the most captivating pieces in the collection are 17th-century Venetian Doge rings, featuring hidden compartments that were once used to conceal poison—elements that remind us of historical intrigue and power dynamics. However, the allure of these pieces is truly magnified by the incredible stories surrounding their discovery.
“There is one ring that my father wore every day,” Victor recalled, pointing to a skull design adorned with a diamond in its mouth. “He found it at a flea market for less than EUR100 because people didn’t know what they had. When he tested the stone, he discovered it was a black diamond.” This ring, now one of the collection’s iconic items, exemplifies Yves’ exceptional ability to unearth overlooked treasures.
True value lies not only in the materials but also in the narratives each piece conveys. While some rings are crafted from precious metals and rare stones, others were acquired for as little as EUR10-15, selected for their unique artistry or historical context. “Usually, people collect from the top, looking only at the best pieces,” Victor explained. “But in this collection, there are also seemingly ordinary pieces that are interesting because of their sculpture or scene. That’s what makes this collection very different.”
The collection, amassed over 40 years by the late gallerist and art dealer Yves Gastou, represents more than just jewelry.
A Personal Journey
Victor’s own engagement with rings initially occurred with reluctance. “As a teenager, I didn’t want to wear these in front of my friends,” he chuckled. “But I started with just one ring, then added a second, then a third.” Now, he adorns himself with multiple rings, including one featuring an intricate Vatican stamp—a piece that connects to one of his earliest memories of his father’s collection.
He reminisces about how Yves acquired a significant number of religious rings following Vatican II, a period during which the Catholic Church shifted away from ornate golden rings toward simpler designs. “Nobody wanted them anymore,” Victor explained. “That’s when my father had the opportunity to buy the most incredible pieces from Millario dits Meller, the official maker of such rings.”
To Victor, rings embody more than mere decoration. “The hand is what distinguishes humans from animals,” he emphasized. “Civilization exists as a result of our ability to build and use tools.” He describes wearing rings as a sensory experience, seamlessly integrating them into one’s daily ritual and personal identity.
For aspiring collectors, Victor’s advice is both simple and profound: “Dare. In the beginning, it’s not easy, and you might make some mistakes, but that’s entirely normal. You have to dare to buy. You will learn, you will meet passionate professionals. Ask questions.”
The exhibition at the L’ÉCOLE Middle East School of Jewelry Arts in Dubai will showcase the Yves Gastou collection of men’s rings for the next few months, appealing to those who appreciate both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary luxury.
This display offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of the Yves Gastou collection, where every ring narrates its own tale of discovery, artistry, and the discerning eye that recognized its worth. It stands as a beacon of Yves Gastou’s enduring legacy and Victor’s commitment to disseminating these treasures to the world.

The Future of the Collection
So, what’s next for Victor’s burgeoning collection? With a glint of enthusiasm in his eyes, he stated, “I’m searching every day, but I don’t know what I might find.”
He hinted at ongoing discussions to bring the Yves Gastou collection of men’s rings to the United States, a move he believes could create a significant impact due to the collection’s considerable emphasis on biker rings.
Jokingly, he remarked about the collection starting to take on a life of its own beyond the Gastou family. “It’s funny because the collection does not belong to me or my sister anymore; she is beginning to have her own life, traveling by herself—I just follow.”
‘Men’s Rings, Yves Gastou Collection’ is currently on display at L’ÉCOLE Middle East, School of Jewelry Arts, Dubai Design District (d3) until April 26, 2025. For more information and to visit, register here.
