The United Arab Emirates has announced that it is closely monitoring the incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv. The flight was diverted and landed safely at Taba Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Investigation Launched by UAE Authorities
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that His Excellency Dr. Hamad Al Shamsi, the UAE’s Attorney General, has ordered the formation of a specialised team from the Public Prosecution to investigate the incident. This decision comes in light of Flydubai’s announcement regarding a disturbance in the aircraft’s cockpit during the flight, which necessitated intervention from crew members on board to ensure safety.
Legal Jurisdiction and Context
The Ministry clarified that the UAE’s judicial authorities have the jurisdiction to investigate the incident under applicable legislation, as the aircraft is registered in the UAE and flies under its flag. Consequently, this means Emirati law applies to crimes committed aboard the flight, even if such incidents occur outside the nation’s territory.
Scope of the Investigation
The ongoing investigations aim to uncover various aspects surrounding the incident, including its motives and potential connections to any terrorist activities or prior planning. Additionally, the UAE expressed its gratitude to the Saudi authorities for their cooperation and handling of the situation.
Encouragement to Rely on Official Information
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised the importance of relying on information and data from official sources, urging the public to avoid speculation or the sharing of unverified information until the investigations are complete and results are publicly announced.
