Heritage Chronicles: The Fascinating World of Hunting and Equestrianism

At the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition 2026, the National Archives and Library platform captivated visitors with a profound exploration of the UAE’s history, cultural heritage, and police traditions through a series of specialised lectures led by distinguished experts. These educational sessions are part of the Archives’ mission to empower knowledge communities, raise awareness about national history, and provide access to historical documents, photographs, and sources for the public. This initiative plays a vital role in preserving Emirati heritage and informing new generations about the nation’s past and its values.

Exploring Emirati Falconry

The programme commenced with a lecture from researcher Mohamed Ismail Abdullah, who delved into the significance of Emirati falconry as reflected in historical documents and photographs. He detailed the rich history and status of falconry within Emirati heritage, highlighting the traditions, values, and practices passed down through generations. The talk illustrated how falconry evolved from a practical means of hunting to a cherished symbol of national identity, deeply embedded in the local culture.

Documenting Cultural Connections

Abdullah emphasised the importance of historical documents and images in documenting the relationship between Emiratis and falcons, as well as their hunting journeys. He shared insights into how these elements reflect various aspects of social and cultural life, linking them to the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His hunting excursions were portrayed as embodiments of patience, resilience, environmental knowledge, and a commitment to cultural heritage.

Understanding Historical Context

Following this, Hamoud Al Kaabi, another archive researcher, presented a lecture on the significance of Emirati heritage. He explored historical facets of life in the UAE, focusing on traditions and crafts tied to both maritime and desert environments. Al Kaabi reiterated how activities like hunting, equestrianism, and falconry embody values such as bravery, patience, attentiveness, responsibility, and environmental awareness.

The Role of the Al Maqtah Museum

In a fascinating segment focusing on police heritage, Hamad Sarhan Al Sawafi shed light on the Al Maqtah Museum. His lecture highlighted Abu Dhabi Island’s history and the role of the Al Maqtah channel in protecting the island. He referenced historical accounts by notable figures, including Gaspar Balbi, Captain George Barnes Brooks, and Lieutenant Samuel Henil, to illustrate the area’s rich and layered past.

Preserving National Memory

The lectures collectively underscored the critical role of archival documents as sources of knowledge and as tools for preserving national memory, reflecting the transformative changes that the UAE has witnessed over the years.
