A Bold Emirati Vision for the Future

Emirates’ Steadfast Diplomatic Approach

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reaffirmed its commitment to a prudent and balanced foreign policy, one anchored in the principles of deterrence, diplomacy, and adherence to international law. This statement comes from Dr. Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to the President of the UAE, amidst a troubling context where ships belonging to ADNOC have faced a series of aggressive incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these provocations, Iran continues to assert its control over maritime navigation in the area, in direct violation of international law, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817.

Commitment to Regional Stability

The UAE’s rational and measured approach stems from a persistent recognition that wisdom is essential in addressing both regional and global complexities. The nation is steadfast in its pursuit of stability, peace, and coexistence—not only within the region but on a global scale. The UAE’s foreign policy strategy for 2023-2026 explicitly outlines five objectives, prominently featuring commitments to regional stability and proactive global responsibility. The first objective highlights the importance of supporting international efforts to maintain regional security and stability, while the second aims to enhance the nation’s role in global dialogue and developmental agendas. This vision is rooted in the principles of collaboration and construction, contrasting sharply with the destructive tactics employed by other regional players, notably Iran.

Foundation of Peace in Foreign Policy

Among the key principles outlined in the ‘Fifty Principles’ is the emphasis on dialogue, negotiation, and peaceful resolution of conflicts as the foundation of the UAE’s foreign policy. The UAE seeks cooperation with regional partners and global allies to fortify both regional and global peace and stability.

Resolute Stance Against Aggression

This keen diplomatic wisdom does not equate to an acceptance of aggression. The UAE firmly believes that such infringements must be addressed, and it has shown resolve in the face of Iranian incursions. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, has been unequivocal in his message to aggressors, stating that “the UAE’s skin is tough, and its flesh is bitter; we will not be consumed.”

Upholding Sovereignty and Maritime Rights

In light of this clear perspective and steadfastness, the freedom of navigation and the right to use the Strait of Hormuz are fundamental to the UAE, rights enshrined in international law for the UAE and other nations alike. The ongoing commitment to defend its sovereign interests is matched by an equally strong dedication to diplomatic dialogue and the prioritisation of peaceful options.

Collective Gulf Efforts for Security

With a firm belief that a unified Gulf stance is critical to protecting regional security and the interests of its states during this ongoing crisis, Dr. Gargash assured that the UAE is fully dedicated to these efforts. From the very onset of the tensions, the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have worked proactively to prevent escalation. When the situation deteriorated, they distanced themselves from the conflict, yet the Iranian hostilities persisted. Despite this, the UAE and its Gulf allies continue to maintain hope for a return to agreements that align with international law.
