Promoting Child Safety in Online Shopping Through Family Oversight

Child Safety Calls for Family Supervision of Children’s Online Shopping

In an increasingly technological age, children’s online shopping is an issue that warrants attention. The Child Safety Foundation urges parents to enhance family oversight of these activities. Online shopping for children is not just a shift in purchasing methods; it comes with various responsibilities related to safety and awareness, making family supervision critically important.

The Importance of Family Supervision

The Child Safety Foundation, part of the Sharjah Family and Community Council, emphasizes the need for parents to be more aware of how their children use smartphones and online shopping applications. While delivery services have become an integral part of our daily lives, their use by children requires clear rules to mitigate potential risks. The foundation calls for families to be able to monitor what children are ordering during online shopping to ensure safety.

The Necessity of Setting Clear Rules

Children’s online shopping can lead to dangerous situations, such as receiving orders without supervision. Therefore, it is essential for parents to establish rules governing the use of applications, ensuring that any purchase is made with family guidance and consent. There should be a trusted adult present during the order receipt process, enhancing children’s protection and providing them with a safe shopping experience.

Educating Children About Digital Safety

Parents must teach their children not to share sensitive information, such as addresses and phone numbers, through applications or digital conversations. They should understand that ease of use does not mean acting independently. While children may view online orders as a normal activity, they require ongoing guidance to comprehend the consequences of their actions.

Ensuring a Safe Shopping Environment

Hanadi Saleh Al-Yafai, Director General of the Child Safety Foundation, highlighted the importance of establishing clear boundaries between what children can use independently and what content should be under adult supervision. “Prevention is not just about keeping children away from risks; it also involves teaching them how to handle digital information responsibly,” Al-Yafai stated. Raising family awareness about children’s online shopping contributes to empowering families to create a safe environment that enhances children’s safety and digital awareness.
