In 2025, the use of public transportation in Dubai soared, with a staggering 802 million passengers opting for various modes of mass transit. This represents a significant leap from the previous year’s figures, highlighting the effectiveness of the city’s transportation initiatives. The dramatic rise in the number of commuters underscores the growing reliance on public transit options like the Dubai Metro, trams, buses, and even marine transport, confirming the pivotal role these systems play in Dubai’s transportation landscape.
Surge in Public Transport Users
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai revealed that the overall adoption of public transportation, which encompasses the Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, public buses, and marine transport, reached an impressive 802.1 million rides in 2025. This marked an increase from approximately 747.1 million rides in 2024, reflecting a growth rate of 7.4%. Daily ridership averaged around 2.2 million passengers, a notable rise from 2 million the previous year.
Despite the burgeoning numbers, luxury vehicle rides, including limousines—which are not counted among public transport figures—saw an uptick as well, with 23.6 million riders reported compared to 19.2 million in 2024. The total number of journeys made via public transport and taxi services hit 167.3 million, with taxis accounting for roughly 120 million of those trips.
Prominent Months for Commuters
During the last quarter of the year, October and November saw the highest number of trips, with each month recording around 15.1 million journeys. Notably, October marked the peak with around 72.8 million riders, followed closely by November with approximately 72.6 million. The overall ridership in December was slightly lower but still substantial, reflecting the clear seasonal patterns in travel demand.
The data illustrates steady operational capacity within Dubai’s public transport system, effectively accommodating increased demand while adapting to seasonal shifts associated with holiday travel.
Strategic Vision Realized
Matar Al Tayer, the RTA Director General, emphasized that the consistent growth in public transportation usage, coupled with a remarkable 30% increase in shared mobility options compared to 2024, signals a significant shift in travel patterns. This upward trend demonstrates the success of the RTA’s strategic vision, aiming to create a comprehensive transport network that enhances the quality of life and supports economic growth in the emirate.
Al Tayer remarked, “These indicators reflect long-term investments in infrastructure and smart technologies, with public transport becoming a critical component of sustainable urban planning.” The integration of these transportation modes provides flexible and safe choices for commuters, fulfilling diverse daily travel needs.
Enhancements and Future Developments
The RTA remains committed to developing a smart, sustainable, and integrated public transport system. Plans for expansion in 2025 and 2026 include extending bus and taxi routes by 13 kilometers, alongside a proposed “trackless tram” initiative aimed at improving accessibility and reducing operational costs.
With targeted improvements in the public transport network, the RTA endeavors to solidify public transport as the primary travel option for Dubai residents and visitors alike, enhancing service quality and geographical reach to accommodate rising populations and economic activity.
This remarkable upswing in the number of riders utilizing public transport highlights Dubai’s commitment to a robust and efficient transportation infrastructure, positioning it as a model for urban mobility in the future.
