Fatima Al Awadhi: The Youngest Arab to Summit Mount Vinson in Antarctica
In a historic and inspiring achievement, Emirati climber Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi reached the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. At just 18 years old, Fatima became the youngest and first Arab woman to climb this mountain, which stands at 4,892 meters. This accomplishment reflects the ability of Emirati youth to overcome challenges and achieve great feats.
A Rigorous Journey to the Summit
This achievement marks the third stop in Fatima’s ambitious project to climb the “Seven Summits,” the highest peaks on each continent. This project demonstrates the determination of Emirati youth and their capability to face tough global challenges. During her journey to the summit of Mount Vinson, Fatima encountered harsh weather conditions, enduring temperatures that dropped to minus forty degrees Celsius, along with situations that demanded a high level of physical and mental preparedness.
A Gift to the Leaders
Fatima dedicated this remarkable achievement to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation.” She expressed her gratitude for their continuous support in empowering Emirati youth and women, praising their commitment to enhancing opportunities for new generations and raising the UAE’s profile in international arenas.
Unprecedented Challenges and Experiences
Fatima described her experience climbing Mount Vinson as an “extraordinary challenge.” The expedition took about three weeks in a harsh environment. She emphasized that standing at the summit was a pivotal moment for her, significantly impacting her belief in her ability to overcome obstacles. She added that the beauty of Antarctica left a deep impression on her, highlighting the importance of ambition and inspiration.
A Message to Arab Youth
As a student majoring in economics, Fatima pointed out the importance of balancing athletic ambition with academic pursuits. She urged Arab youth, especially young women, to work hard to achieve their aspirations, stressing that “today’s generation is the maker of the present and the future.” Fatima’s achievement in adding a new summit to her record enhances the UAE’s role as a model of empowerment and innovation.
Fatima Al Awadhi’s journey is supported by “Palms Sports” and “Dar Al Tamweel,” the pillars backing her previous projects. Her ascent to the summit of Mount Vinson signifies a significant step toward achieving the “Explorer’s Grand Slam,” which focuses on climbing the Seven Summits and reaching both the North and South Poles, thereby establishing the UAE’s status both regionally and globally in the fields of adventure and mountain sports.
