GII Aims for $10 Billion by Tripling Asset Base

In a bold move to significantly enhance its financial footprint, GII is striving to triple its assets to reach a staggering $10 billion. This ambition places GII among the most dynamic private equity firms in the Middle East, highlighting its proactive approach amid a competitive landscape increasingly dominated by global acquisition giants.

Strategizing Growth Amidst Market Challenges

Based in Dubai, GII has invested over $1 billion in the last four years, despite facing strong competition from international players in its local markets. The firm aims to expand on a larger scale, actively working towards increasing its managed assets threefold to hit the $10 billion mark by the end of this decade.

Short-Term Financial Maneuvers

In the short term, GII plans to bolster its liquidity by up to $400 million. This will be achieved through capital increases and the issuance of Islamic debt instruments, as stated by co-founder Mohammed Al Hasan. “We aim to bolster our approach by enhancing our liquidity,” he noted, emphasizing the strategic moves the company is making to support its growth initiatives.

Potential Acquisitions and Future Offerings

To facilitate its expansion, GII is also exploring the possibility of acquiring a competing financial firm. Preliminary discussions have been held with a regional provider of sharia-compliant real estate financing, although Al Hasan withheld further details. Moreover, the company is contemplating a potential initial public offering (IPO) by the end of the decade, which could serve as a significant catalyst for achieving its ambitious $10 billion target.

Setting Sights on Industry Leadership

Al Hasan expressed a clear vision for GII’s future, stating, “Our goal is to become the Blackstone of the Middle East,” referring to the global leader in alternative asset management overseeing assets exceeding $1 trillion. A fundamental aspect of GII’s offering is its ability to act as a bridge for international investors, providing access to lucrative opportunities in the region. This unique positioning offers the firm a competitive edge as the Middle East evolves into a global hub for private equity.

With major players like KKR & Co., Permira, and Brookfield Asset Management carving out their own spaces in the region, GII is not only trying to navigate this landscape but also reshaping it. Historically viewed as a source of capital, the region is now blossoming into an attractive investment destination. The firm is also contending with local rivals such as Gulf Capital, Affirma Capital, and Fajr Capital, further underlining the vibrant ecosystem in which it operates.

As the regional acquisition sector continues to recover from the fallout of the Abraaj Group’s collapse in 2018, GII is poised to leverage the renewed investor confidence. Despite the challenges faced in the past, the appetite for private equity in the Middle East remains robust, and GII’s commitment to its ambitious goal reaffirms its place in this evolving market.
