Honoring Human Solidarity Through Family Connections and Lasting Impact

The International Day of Human Solidarity, observed on December 20th each year, coincides with a month that carries profound meanings of assessment, recognition, and impact review. December is not merely the end of a year filled with achievements and challenges; it serves as a moment for reflection on the quality of giving rather than just its quantity, as well as the effects of initiatives rather than their mere launch. In the United Arab Emirates, this day takes on an additional dimension during the Year of Family, emphasizing that human values—most notably solidarity—begin at home, are rooted in society, and evolve into sustainable policies and initiatives for the benefit of the environment and humanity. Thus, the family is the primary nucleus where individuals learn the meanings of compassion, responsibility, and supporting one another. This foundational unit is the first school where a culture of conscious giving, built on empathy for others, is instilled, focusing on creating a genuine impact in people’s lives. From this perspective, human solidarity naturally extends from authentic family values to a solid institutional approach at the national level and a daily cultural practice at the community level.

Family as the Bedrock of Values

Within the UAE, we adhere to a motto that encapsulates these compassionate behaviors rooted in humanity: “Ayal Zayed.” The UAE joins the global community in celebrating this day, armed with a rich record of humanitarian and relief initiatives that have reinforced its position as a key player in the international solidarity framework. This legacy emanates from the fundamental values championed by our founding leader, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose vision was rooted in the well-being of individuals, families, and society.

Sustaining Human Solidarity

Today, the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, continues to build bridges of goodwill to peoples around the world, especially during trying times when the highest meanings of human brotherhood are revealed. The strategic vision implemented ensures that human solidarity remains a firmly established principle, unaffected by borders or differences.

The Role of Strategic Collaboration

The UAE has long underscored that effective humanitarian work is not limited to emergency responses but is predicated on sustainable social responsibility and capacity building. The nation has supported communities in overcoming conflicts and natural disasters, consistently ranking among the largest donors of humanitarian aid. This commitment reflects an ethical obligation towards less fortunate populations, regardless of religious, ethnic, or cultural backgrounds—an ethos clearly stated in Principle Nine of the UAE’s Fifty Principles.

Engaging the Third Sector

In this context, the third sector—which encompasses public benefit institutions, charities, and social welfare funds—emerges as a vital player in promoting sustainable development and social responsibility. This sector acts as a crucial link between communities and both government and private sectors while contributing to social services, supporting vulnerable groups, and developing innovative solutions for societal challenges. Consequently, the importance of strategic collaboration with “Majra” (the National Fund for Social Responsibility) stands out. This national umbrella directs charitable and community efforts from the private sector and individuals towards measurable impact projects that adhere to sustainability and governance standards.

Innovating for Human Solidarity

The concept of human solidarity no longer merely encompasses traditional aid; it is now interconnected with social innovation and transforming challenges into development opportunities. By integrating local expertise with technical and institutional support, effective models emerge to craft sustainable solutions that address community needs while aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s future vision. Strengthening a shared culture of social responsibility among public and private sectors, along with community organizations, enhances resource efficiency, ensures the continuity of initiatives, and fosters a holistic support ecosystem where human development is both central and its aim.

True solidarity is that which leaves a lasting impact, enhances quality of life, promotes volunteerism and community engagement, while simultaneously preserving natural resources for future generations. This principle has been dubbed the “impact economy,” yielding positive returns for society and the environment over the long term, with the private sector playing a proactive role.

December offers an ideal opportunity to transition from seasonal giving to responsible philanthropy and from immediate initiatives to programs that have measurable effects and sustainability. The Year of Family highlights the importance of instilling human values from an early age and activating them throughout society. On the International Day of Human Solidarity, we reaffirm that the UAE experience represents a pioneering model in integrating charitable work, social responsibility, and sustainability. The collaboration between “Majra” and the third sector exemplifies a conscious national vision that transforms human values into tangible results, contributing to building a cohesive society, a vibrant environment, and a fairer and balanced future for humanity as a whole.
