Sharjah Electricity Utilizes Satellites to Save 2 Billion Gallons of Water

In an innovative step to enhance water consumption efficiency, the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority has launched a pioneering project for detecting water leaks using satellites. This initiative aims to secure two billion gallons of water, reflecting the Authority’s commitment to improving its services and increasing efficiency in water resources. In this context, we highlight the achievements of this Authority through the use of modern technologies to conserve this vital resource.

Authority’s Efforts in Leak Detection

The efforts of the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority in implementing the satellite water leak detection project have yielded remarkable results, with the discovery and resolution of 1,345 leaks in transmission and distribution lines. Through this project, 1,331 million gallons were saved, equivalent to 46 million dirhams, highlighting the importance of these efforts in preserving water resources.

Advanced Technologies Used

Engineer Faisal Al-Sarkal, Director of the Water Department at the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority, explained that the Authority utilized satellite technology to survey a water network extending over 5,000 km. Additionally, the field team was responsible for surveying 950 km of the network using advanced acoustic detection devices to locate leaks that are not visible to the naked eye.

Notable Results and Rapid Response

Thanks to these advanced technologies and the team’s swift response, the Authority was able to detect and address a significant number of leaks from March 2024 to May 2025. The use of satellites in projects like this demonstrates the potential for expanding the use of technology to improve water resource management in Sharjah and provides a model to be emulated in other fields.

These achievements show how leveraging modern technologies plays a pivotal role in water resource management, thereby enhancing sustainability in the region. The efforts of the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority not only reflect its desire to achieve technological advancement but also its commitment to the community and the environment.
