The second edition of the “Future Fishermen” programme in Sharjah has concluded, leaving 75 participants with invaluable knowledge and skills related to traditional fishing practices and marine safety. Organised by the Sharjah Fisheries Authority in collaboration with the Sharjah Youth and local fishing cooperatives, the initiative aims to strengthen the connection between younger generations and the Emirati maritime heritage while promoting sustainable fishing practices and environmental awareness.
Programme Overview
The programme spanned multiple cities, including Sharjah, Hamriyah, Khor Fakkan, Kalba, and Dibba Al-Hisn. Participants engaged in a blend of theoretical lectures and field training, culminating in hands-on experiences at sea that highlighted the fishing profession and its methodologies. They were introduced to key traditional fishing techniques such as “Hadak,” “Gharaqir,” and “Shubak,” along with the types of fish targeted by each method.
Moreover, the curriculum incorporated essential marine safety training. Participants learned to interpret weather conditions, understand tides, conduct boat inspections, and practice first aid—a multifaceted approach aimed at fostering responsible fishing habits while ensuring personal safety at sea.
Hands-on Experience
The programme also featured practical applications where participants shadowed experienced fishermen and captains. They engaged in actual fishing activities, learning to preserve fish stocks by returning smaller catches to the sea, thereby reinforcing sustainability concepts critical for the protection of marine resources for future generations. This hands-on experience also nurtured skills in teamwork, responsibility, and decision-making.
Preserving Maritime Heritage
Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazien, Head of the Sharjah Fisheries Authority, expressed pride in the programme’s achievements, which succeed in strengthening youth connections to the Emirati maritime heritage while promoting sustainable fishing and the protection of fish stocks. He emphasised that the initiative reflects the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in safeguarding the Emirati maritime legacy.
Abu Ghazien added, “True investment begins with building individuals and instilling values of responsibility, belonging, and sustainability in our youth.” He acknowledged the contributions of participants, their families, Sharjah Youth, fishing cooperatives, instructors, trainers, and all partners and supporters who made the programme a success. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to launching innovative initiatives that blend knowledge and practical application, aiming to cultivate a generation committed to conserving the nation’s fishery resources and preserving Emirati maritime heritage for those who come after.
