Dubai Financial Courts Address $5 Billion Legal Dispute

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts have recently unveiled their five-year growth strategy, highlighting significant priorities during the annual judges’ meeting. This gathering focused on assessing the courts’ performance and mapping out the next stages in service development. Central to this discussion is the impressive figure of 18.6 billion dirhams in claims filed, underscoring the increasing reliance on DIFC Courts as a preferred venue for legal disputes in Dubai.

Performance Metrics for 2025

During the annual meeting, judges reviewed the statistics from 2025, showcasing a total of 1,509 cases filed across all divisions, representing a remarkable annual increase of 43%. The average claim value at the primary court reached 68.2 million dirhams, displaying a healthy rise in litigation. The small claims court noted a staggering 68% surge in the number of cases initiated, indicating growing confidence in this segment of the judiciary.

Notable Achievements in Claims

A particularly strong indicator of public trust is seen in the primary court and its divisions, which recorded 173 cases with an aggregate claim value of 7.6 billion dirhams. The arbitration department stood out, reporting the highest single value of claims at 4.95 billion dirhams, with an average claim of 150.2 million dirhams across 53 disputes. Meanwhile, the civil and commercial department processed 117 cases in 2025, amounting to a total value of 2.6 billion dirhams.

Supporting Business Reliability

In enhancing its reputation for business reliability, the DIFC Courts facilitated 341 enforcement requests in 2025, totaling an impressive 10.9 billion dirhams. Notably, 31% of the cases brought before the primary court involved parties voluntarily choosing to settle disputes through the DIFC Courts, affirming the global standing of this judiciary body. Judge Wayne Martin, head of the DIFC Courts, remarked, “The 2025 data reflects sustainable growth in the number of claims filed, with a notable increase in the primary court’s cases.”

Digital Transformation and Future Strategy

The DIFC Courts have committed to a digital transformation, achieving a paperless environment by issuing 2,676 orders and 181 digital judgments in 2025. An impressive 99% of court sessions were held digitally, enhancing accessibility and efficiency for users. Judge Omar Al-Muhairi, the director of the DIFC Courts, stated, “Throughout 2025, the courts consistently enhanced their service efficiency and accessibility.” This focus has, in turn, led to a significant rise in demand for supporting services.

The new growth strategy for 2026-2030 comprises six strategic pillars and over 20 initiatives to further cement DIFC Courts’ status as a leading destination for commercial justice, reinforcing Dubai’s position as an international financial and commercial hub.
