In an impressive development for sustainable transportation, Dubai has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging network to over 1,860 charging points. This significant growth reflects the city’s commitment to promoting green mobility and demonstrates effective collaboration between the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and various public and private sector entities. As this initiative progresses, it plays a vital role in reshaping urban transportation dynamics and fostering an eco-friendly future.
Expansion of the Charging Network
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, announced that the “Green Charger” network now boasts more than 1,860 charging points for electric vehicles. This expansion aligns with efforts to support the increasing demand for electric vehicles in the region. By mid-January 2026, an impressive 23,600 users had registered for the Green Charger initiative. Al Tayer emphasized that this initiative has been a crucial component since its launch in 2014, having delivered over 55,200 megawatt-hours of electricity, enabling electric vehicles to cover an astonishing 276 million kilometers.
A Vision for Sustainable Mobility
Al Tayer affirmed the commitment to fulfilling the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. He stated, “We aim to solidify Dubai’s position as a global leader in the shift towards a green economy and sustainable mobility, making it one of the best-prepared cities in the world for the future.” This vision is part of a broader strategy that encompasses Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to stimulate the use of eco-friendly transport options.
Infrastructure Development for Green Mobility
The expansion of the 1,860 charging points underscores the necessity of robust infrastructure to keep pace with the growing number of electric vehicles. DEWA is focused on creating an efficient charging experience for users to enhance Dubai’s reputation as a global destination for living, working, and visiting. This initiative is also a crucial part of the UAE’s Climate Neutrality Strategy 2050 and reflects the emirate’s profound commitment to sustainability, improving air quality, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Variety of Charging Stations Available
DEWA provides a variety of “Green Charger” stations, including ultra-fast charging, fast charging, public charging, and wall-mounted chargers. This diverse offering ensures that users have convenient access to 1,860 charging points, catering to different charging needs and preferences, ultimately fostering greater adoption of electric vehicles throughout the city.
With continuous advancements in infrastructure and technology, Dubai is set to pave the way for a greener future, reinforcing its image as a forward-thinking city dedicated to sustainable growth and environmentally friendly initiatives.
