In the dynamic landscape of the UAE’s workforce, achieving professional dreams can be challenging for Emirati talent. A recent report highlights ten barriers that hinder the realization of professional aspirations for Emirati professionals, exposing obstacles that prevent young Emiratis from unlocking their full potential in the job market. While universities strive to equip students with the skills needed to adapt to these evolving demands, a significant gap remains between education and employment readiness.
Identified Barriers
A study conducted by Al-Futtaim Group, in collaboration with G42, the American University in Dubai, and KPMG Middle East, revealed that Emirati youth face several hurdles. Based on the responses of over 500 Emiratis, the report addresses ten barriers that hinder the realization of professional aspirations for Emirati professionals. The most pressing issues include intense competition for entry-level roles (33%), challenges in balancing work and personal life (29%), limited awareness of diverse career pathways (28%), and a notable lack of practical experience or skills (28%). Other factors include a shortage of suitable job opportunities (25%), limited access to training programs (23%), unclear career advancement paths (23%), misalignment between academic skills and sectoral requirements (21%), insufficient career guidance (21%), and the influence of traditional perceptions on career choices (19%).
Emerging Technologies Interest
The report also notes a keen interest among youth in emerging technologies, particularly AI and cybersecurity. Despite 62% expressing optimism about AI’s role in the future workforce, only 33% recognize the importance of data literacy for success. This disparity highlights a critical awareness gap that acts as one of the barriers hindering the realization of professional aspirations for Emirati professionals. Furthermore, the survey indicates that 30% prioritize internships and career coaching as their primary developmental needs, followed closely by improving access to labor market information (29%) and enhanced vocational training.
The Importance of Soft Skills
Another facet of the report reveals a strong desire among the youth to understand which skills are genuinely valued by employers and to comprehend career progression paths. It emphasizes the need for them to nurture essential soft skills such as emotional intelligence, effective communication, and humility—competencies that significantly enhance their professional roles. Addressing these barriers is crucial for enabling Emirati youth to thrive in their careers.
Practical Training Initiatives
Officials from UAE universities have reiterated their commitment to aligning academic programs with current and future market needs. According to Professor Ibrahim Al-Hajri, President of Khalifa University, there is a continuous review of curricula to prepare graduates to meet future demands. The university focuses on developing flexible and updated study programs that involve industry experts in shaping academic offerings. This partnership ensures that students gain practical experiences and skills relevant to emerging sectors.
Furthermore, Dr. Ahmad Mourad, Acting Director of UAE University, emphasizes the importance of aligning academic programs with industry requirements, incorporating cutting-edge technologies like automation and IoT into the curriculum. Similarly, Professor Ghassan Awad, Director of Abu Dhabi University, advocates for an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing adaptability and experiential learning to equip students for the labor market.
According to Dr. Hisham Jumaa from the American University of Sharjah, the institution adopts a proactive approach in preparing students for future job markets. Recognizing that excellence requires more than academic knowledge, they focus on developing students’ adaptability and continuous skill acquisition. By updating curricula and fostering strategic partnerships with various industries, the university aims to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, ultimately enhancing students’ readiness for the workforce.
These collective efforts underscore the significance of addressing the barriers that hinder the realization of professional aspirations for Emirati professionals by equipping Emirati youth with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-evolving job landscape.
