In a remarkable achievement for Emirati representation in technical fields, Zainab Flamerzi has made history as the first Emirati female quality controller at Engie Solutions, responsible for auditing the quality of operations associated with the Dubai Tram network. This spans 13 stations, the main depot, and pedestrian bridges along the tram route.
From Academic Foundations to Practical Application
Zainab joined Engie Solutions in 2019, marking the beginning of her professional journey. Over the past six years, she has gained extensive experience in internal audit processes, field visits, and monitoring the activities of engineering and technical teams.
The transition from academic study to fieldwork posed significant challenges at the outset of her career, particularly as she undertook auditing responsibilities and engaged in discussions with seasoned engineers and managers. However, she credits the supportive work environment, along with a wealth of advice, for helping her navigate these early hurdles. Zainab views these challenges as valuable learning opportunities that fostered her professional development.
Academic Background Fueling a Passion for Quality
A graduate of Dubai Women’s College, part of the Higher Colleges of Technology, Zainab earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, specializing in quality management and strategy. She applied these academic concepts practically in her role within the facilities of the Dubai Tram.
Her family instilled in her a deep appreciation for organisation and precision from a young age, emphasising the importance of responsibility, attention to detail, and striving for excellence in task completion. This foundational value has been crucial as she transitioned from theoretical studies to real-world application, engaging with operational procedures and ensuring compliance with established standards.
Rigorous Auditing and Proactive Problem Solving
Among Zainab’s key responsibilities are conducting internal audits on civil, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing works, alongside performing field inspections to verify adherence to approved protocols. During one of her audits, she identified the need for updating several documents, including training records and a business license. Recognising the potential for these issues to surface during an external audit, she promptly informed the relevant management and set a target date for addressing the requirements, subsequently following up until all documents were updated and issues resolved.
Zainab acknowledges that the biggest challenges in quality control extend beyond technical aspects to include coordinating between various parties and departments with differing operational priorities. Her methodical approach involves documenting observations, setting deadlines for resolutions, and ensuring follow-up procedures are implemented effectively, thus supporting the quality of work associated with the transport network facilities.
Professional Development and Representation
To further her career, Zainab has enhanced her qualifications with several professional certifications, including Lead Auditor for ISO 9001, internal auditor for Integrated Management Systems and ISO 41001, along with training in first aid, fire safety, and electrical safety. She operates in a diverse work environment comprising staff from numerous nationalities, and believes that the presence of national talents in such roles brings both responsibility and opportunities to highlight the capabilities of Emirati youth and women in technical and specialised fields.
Moreover, Zainab is dedicated to positively representing the UAE and Emirati women in quality management by constantly honing her skills and elevating her professional performance. She views her role in this domain as both a source of pride and a responsibility that motivates her to continue learning and evolving in her career.
