UAE Enhances Global Relations with Food Security Initiatives

The United Arab Emirates boasts a robust and advanced food security system interconnected through a global network that ensures access to diverse food sources. This strategic approach positions the UAE to effectively manage supply disruptions and maintain a steady flow of essential products for consumers at all times, solidifying its role as a regional hub in the food distribution landscape.

Strategic Insights from the Minister

During a recent visit to the Lulu Hypermarket in Sharjah, His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the Supreme Consumer Protection Committee, emphasized that the UAE enjoys a strong food security system. This system does not solely rely on local stockpiles but is supported by an extensive network of economic relationships with global markets. This connectivity enables the country to access alternative food sources readily if any supply chain is interrupted.

Logistical Excellence

Al Marri elaborated on the UAE’s advanced logistical infrastructure, which includes global ports, multiple shipping routes, and efficient air and ground transportation networks. These facilities, paired with modern storage and handling centers, position the UAE as a central distribution hub in the region. This capability allows the nation to respond adeptly to any disruptions in supply chains, ensuring that essential goods remain available to consumers, even during peak seasons and holidays.

Market Stability and Price Monitoring

The minister’s inspection aligns with ongoing efforts to monitor market stability and ensure a plentiful supply of food products to meet consumer needs. This initiative aims to prepare stores for increased demand during festive periods, confirming the availability of fresh and diverse staple products in sufficient quantities. The ministry remains committed to ensuring consumer comfort and maintaining market stability.

Collaboration for Consistent Supply

Yusuf Ali Musallam, Chairman of Lulu Group International, stated that the group collaborates closely with its global sourcing offices and other manufacturers to ensure an uninterrupted supply of food products and stable prices across its UAE stores. Recently, the group imported over 5,000 tons of various perishable and non-perishable food items globally using 26 chartered flights and shipping vessels. He acknowledged the support from the wise leadership and governmental initiatives during these challenging times.

Promotions and Consumer Options

The visit revealed a range of promotions and discounts on essential consumer goods, such as rice, oils, eggs, dairy, and poultry. These offers stem from increased supply and a variety of choices available to consumers, reflecting retailers’ commitment to meet family needs during peak seasons and holidays. Purchase behaviors have remained steady, with no signs of stockpiling, thanks to the adequate supply and stable market conditions.

Regulatory Measures to Safeguard Consumers

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism continues to enhance market oversight in collaboration with economic development departments nationwide. During these unprecedented times, specialized teams are deployed to ensure market monitoring, supported by the ministry’s electronic price surveillance system. This system covers 627 primary retail outlets, including cooperative societies, hypermarkets, and major stores, representing nearly 90% of the domestic market for essential consumer goods. This approach reinforces price stability and safeguards consumer interests.

With ongoing efforts in place, the ministry urges the public to report any market violations, product shortages, or unfair commercial practices, including unjustified price hikes. This call for vigilance helps protect consumer rights, stabilize markets, and effectively supervise retail performance.
