UAEs Journey Toward a Thriving Economic Future

In a rapidly evolving global economy, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers a unique experience in growth and transformation for the new economy, exemplifying a transformative approach that merges innovation with robust legislative reforms. The UAE has made significant strides over the past five years, achieving remarkable milestones that solidify its status as a competitive economy. This article delves into the UAE’s economic advancements, showcasing how it has positioned itself as a premier destination for business and tourism.

Transformative Economic Growth

Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s Minister of Economy and Tourism, emphasized that the nation has been at the forefront of presenting a global model for growth and transformation in the new economy. He noted the exceptional economic transformations that have taken place in the past five years, primarily through diversification efforts aimed at reducing dependence on oil. The national economy has consistently recorded growth rates between 4% and 5%, among the highest worldwide. He anticipates similar growth for this year.

Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises

Today, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) represent a staggering 95% of total businesses operating in the UAE, employing around 86% of the private sector workforce. The UAE is home to over 50 government and private business incubators and accelerators. The ministry has rolled out a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework for family-owned businesses, introducing new family business laws and a unified registry encompassing more than 12 family enterprises. This workspace promotes family businesses, particularly through initiatives like the “Thabat” program, which has successfully supported 200 family businesses with their investments and entrepreneurial projects.

Innovative Initiatives and Global Partnerships

The “100 Companies of the Future” initiative has garnered over 1,100 applications annually, successfully attracting 250 projects. Notably, 43% of these projects in 2024 are local initiatives. This initiative has led to a robust collaboration network of over 38 strategic partners, facilitating investments in 30 projects totaling around 146.8 million Dirhams (40 million USD). Furthermore, the Ministry is focusing on specialized economic clusters, notably the “Food Economic Cluster,” which has welcomed more than 100 leading companies and identified over 30 actionable initiatives since its inception.

Impacts on the Tourism Sector

The recent transition of the Ministry to include tourism reflects the sector’s critical role in the UAE’s economy. Tourism now accounts for 13% of the GDP, with projections suggesting this figure could rise to 17% in the coming years. The minister anticipates that hotel occupancy will soar, with expected guest arrivals hitting 33 million in 2025 and hotel revenues increasing by 7% from 2024 levels. With aviation improvements aimed at accommodating 160 million travelers, the UAE is set to become an even more attractive global tourism hub.

In the broader perspective, the UAE offers a global experience in growth and transformation for the new economy, showcasing a blend of legislative innovation and economic foresight. As the UAE strides into the future, its proactive measures set a standard that could inspire similar transformations across the globe.
