UAE and South Korea Enhance Strategic Partnership for Future Growth

The relationship between the UAE and South Korea has taken a significant step forward as the leaders of both countries have agreed to enhance cooperation across various sectors. During a recent phone call, the President of South Korea, Lee Myung-bak, expressed his eagerness to strengthen the strategic partnership established in 2018. This collaboration aims to focus on future-oriented areas, emphasizing the importance of expanding efforts in cutting-edge technologies and mutual interests. The agreement underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen ties, with specific plans to meet in person later this year.

Strengthening the Strategic Partnership

As highlighted by Kang Yoo-jung, spokesperson for the South Korean presidential office, President Lee conveyed a strong desire to develop the special strategic partnership established in 2018 between the UAE and South Korea. This partnership aims to bolster collaboration in sectors that are deemed “strategic and future-oriented.” The agreement to enhance cooperation focuses on critical areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, defense industries, and nuclear energy.

Upcoming Diplomatic Engagements

Both leaders have expressed intentions to hold direct discussions during upcoming diplomatic events, particularly at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled to take place this year in Jeongju, South Korea. This meeting will provide a prime opportunity to continue exploring avenues for reinforcing bilateral relations. The UAE and South Korea’s commitment to enhancing cooperation demonstrates a mutual understanding of the importance of solidifying their strategic partnership.

A Comprehensive Economic Agreement

Since the elevation of their relationship to a “special strategic partnership” in 2018, significant strides have been made between the UAE and South Korea. A comprehensive trade agreement, known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), was recently signed, eliminating tariffs on most imports and exports. This foundational agreement is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting economic collaboration and reducing trade barriers.

Investment and Technological Collaboration

During President Lee’s visit to Abu Dhabi in January 2023, the UAE announced plans to invest $30 billion in South Korea, encompassing sectors such as nuclear energy, defense, hydrogen energy, and solar power. This investment highlights the commitment to their special strategic partnership. Additionally, both countries have built defense collaborations, including joint ventures in satellite industries and initiatives involving drones and cybersecurity, aimed at enhancing technological and security capabilities.

The agreement between the UAE and South Korea to enhance cooperation marks a significant advancement in their longstanding relationship, positioning both countries as leaders in technology, energy, and defense on the global stage.
