The UAE and Russia have established a robust partnership centered on strategic cooperation across various fields, with space exploration emerging as a highlight. This collaboration reflects both nations’ aspirations for innovation and scientific advancement, underscoring the vital role of space in global development. Through their close ties, the UAE has leveraged Russia’s extensive expertise, resulting in significant achievements that position the nation as an emerging power in the global space arena.
Historical Agreements
The collaboration between the UAE and Russia in the realm of space stretches back over a decade. Intensive coordination meetings between the UAE Space Agency and the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, took place consistently for a year, culminating in a memorandum of understanding. This agreement laid the groundwork for a long-term partnership that the UAE aimed to foster. This initial memorandum eventually led to a historic agreement between the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre and Roscosmos, enabling the launch of the first Emirati astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a Russian scientific mission aboard the Soyuz MS spacecraft.
Choosing Russia as a partner for this ambitious endeavor was strategically important due to its rich scientific and technological heritage in space exploration. This collaboration provided the UAE with the ideal opportunity to enhance its capabilities and achieve a milestone with the successful arrival of the first Emirati astronaut at the ISS aboard a Russian spacecraft.
Training and Missions
Prior to their missions, Emirati astronauts Hazzaa AlMansoori and Sultan AlNeyadi underwent extensive training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Moscow’s Star City in September 2018. As part of their preparation for their journey to the ISS, they participated in rigorous training alongside other astronauts. This culminated in the historic flight of Hazzaa AlMansoori to the ISS in September 2019, marking him as the first Arab astronaut to visit the station. This mission was a direct result of the collaboration agreement signed between the two nations in June 2018, allowing AlMansoori to conduct 16 scientific experiments in cooperation with global agencies, including the Russian space agency.
The partnership continued to yield remarkable results with Sultan AlNeyadi’s mission in 2023, which became the longest space mission in Arab history, lasting six months. During this time, he contributed to over 200 scientific experiments and completed the first-ever Arab spacewalk, further solidifying the UAE’s position on the global space map.
Scientific Research and Exploration
In 2022, the UAE advanced its scientific endeavors by executing “Mission One” as part of its space simulation project. Emirati astronaut Salah AlAmri successfully completed an eight-month isolation experience within the simulated environment of the Medical and Biological Research Institute in Moscow. Programmed under the Sirius 21 project, this initiative gathered astronauts from the UAE, Russia, and the United States to conduct 70 scientific experiments simulating conditions on Mars.
The goal of this research was to involve a specialized human team in simulated living conditions akin to the harsh terrain and environment of the Red Planet, alongside requisite behavioral studies to analyze the scientific outcomes. This mission aims to prepare for future manned exploration of Mars while focusing on understanding the impact of long-term isolation on the psychological and physical well-being of individuals.
The UAE’s involvement underscores its commitment to enhancing capabilities as part of the Mars 2117 project, aimed at establishing human settlements on Mars by the year 2117, thereby supporting astronauts’ future missions to the planet.
Government Agreements
Complementing these initiatives, the UAE and Russia recently signed a new governmental agreement to enhance the peaceful use of outer space during the International Astronautical Congress. This agreement encompasses various areas, including crewed space missions, launch services, satellite communications, advanced technologies, and medical and biological research, in addition to organizing space activities through the development of legal frameworks and enhancing international governance in this vital sector.
The agreement also emphasizes the execution of joint programs and projects, which involve designing, manufacturing, testing, launching, and operating space systems and vehicles, as well as exchanging scientific and technical data. This cooperation is a crucial extension of the UAE’s commitment to building an integrated space sector that meets global challenges and positions the UAE as a reliable scientific partner in the international space community.
The momentum of the collaboration between the UAE and Russia in space exploration is ongoing. It reflects not merely scientific and technical proximity but also a shared commitment to serving humanity and envisioning a better future for upcoming generations. This partnership showcases how shared ambitions in innovation and knowledge can create significant achievements that transcend borders and contribute to a more developed and integrated world.
